With such a long pause on live performances, it’s understandable that many artists will struggle with stage fright as they begin performing again. Stage fright is a natural part of getting onstage, but it doesn’t mean it feels easy to deal with. Here are two tips to help you cope.

1) Embrace the nerves. Sometimes being nervous is a given! So instead of trying to wish away the nerves, channel them in a positive way. Acknowledge that you’re nervous and incorporate that extra energy into giving a great performance.

2) Overprepare. When we’re nervous, it’s easy to forget words or choreography onstage or to make silly mistakes. Put the time into extra preparation so you know what to do and know you are capable. This will build up your confidence before a performance.

Since nerves are unavoidable, set yourself up for success by accepting their presence in your mind and body, and use preparation strategies that embrace them.

As a live stream artist, sharing a performance can feel lonely. Aside from comments and “likes,” there is no way to see your audience to get reactions and feedback about how it’s going. When you’re back on stage for the first time, remember to check in with them! Are they engaged? How is their energy level? Which types of songs are they enjoying most? Use this feedback to help you pace the show and make changes for future performances.

As live performances pick up again, it’s easy to focus on perfection. Wanting to be the best you can, not make mistakes, and give a flawless performance. But an audience isn’t there for perfection, they’re there to feel magic! They want to be moved and lose themselves in the story. So, as you head back on stage, don’t aim for perfection. Create magic!

When starting back up with performing after a long hiatus, it is natural to feel out of the groove. Suddenly after playing a song or two on a Livestream, you now have to share an entire set and it feels daunting! The best way to combat these feelings of overwhelm is to focus on preparation. Know what comes next so you can keep away from lyrics sheets or written notes, allowing you to stay present during the entire performance. Remember, the audience is there to see you and connect with you!

As an artist, an online presence has never been more important. The past year in quarantine sped up changes within the industry and now audiences expect to explore an online presence before deciding if they want to see a performance or not. So whether you’re just starting your social media pages or are already established online, here are three tips for improving your presence!

1) Be cohesive. Double-check that all of your profile pictures and names are the same. Make it as easy as possible for people to find you on their platform of choice and immediately know that it’s you.

2) Post organically. When creating content for social media, you want it all to appear organic to that platform. For example, cross-posting from Instagram to Twitter will share a caption and a link to the image, but no organic image. This type of post shows your audience that you don’t actively use the platform and could discourage a person from engaging with your content or following you.

3) Mind the details. Make sure that all of your post links are correct, and if you’re using “link in bio” on Instagram, ensure that the profile link is updated regularly. When people are interested in seeing more of your content but the link doesn’t take them to the right place, it breaks down trust with your audience and makes them less likely to engage next time.

TL;DR Make it as easy as possible for people to trust you and want to engage with you. Taking care of the details helps your audience focus on what really matters: your art!

This summer, arts venues all over the world are opening their doors again after being dark for over a year. There is nothing like experiencing a live performance and we can’t wait to see you take the stage again for an enthusiastic audience! Our tip for success? Embrace the nerves. After so long offstage, it may feel overwhelming to start performing again, and parts of the process may feel unfamiliar. This is normal, so give yourself grace when you make mistakes and focus on the excitement of returning to the theatre. Break a leg!
