We are supporting Holly Shaftoe, an MSc student studying Nature Recovery, Restoration and Rewilding at the University of Manchester.

For her independent research project, she is exploring perceptions of rewilding and connections to nature at
Broughton Sanctuary in Skipton.

Adults (18+) familiar with Broughton Sanctuary, including visitors,
employees, residents and volunteers are invited to complete her short anonymous survey. It takes around 10 minutes and will be open until the 29th August.

At Broughton, we are led by the wisdom of nature to offer a renaissance for the human spirit. Moments like last night’s solar eclipse beautifully underpin that philosophy — a reminder from the natural world to pause and reconnect with something beyond ourselves.

As the light shifted and the landscape fell into an extraordinary stillness, there was that incredible sense of being part of something so much bigger than us. 🌑

On International Owl Awareness Day today we join with the world to celebrate these fabulous nocturnal birds of prey and to encourage their conservation.

Broughton Sanctuary we are blessed with all five species of British Owl present on our land. The Barn Owl in general has seen a strong, national long-term recovery, benefiting from mild winters and active nest-box conservation. Sadly, the outlook for the other species is less positive, experiencing notable decline. The Long-eared Owl, in particular, remains scarce and elusive.

You can help owls where you live by avoiding the use of rat poison, leaving areas of long grass uncut to support voles and field mice, and installing suitable nest boxes.

This is possibly the discovery of the year from our archives: handwritten notes and a map dating from the early 1700s that provide evidence of where the original Broughton Hall once stood.

While the present-day Broughton Hall dates from 1597, an earlier home for the Tempest family is known to have existed from the 13th or 14th century.

The documents suggest it may have been protected by a moat, probably created by diverting the nearby beck.

We are continuing to explore this fascinating discovery and hope to share more as our research progresses.
