🌷 Tulips 101: How to Care for Your Tulips After They Bloom 🌷
During our recent trip to the Netherlands, we had the incredible opportunity to visit one of the largest flower growers in the world — Holstein Gerbera. Seeing the scale of the glasshouses and the precision behind every stem was truly breathtaking.
And while we were surrounded by thousands of beautiful blooms, our absolute favourite had to be the stunning **Pasta Gerbera** — a beautifully delicate variety with soft, elegant petals that feels both whimsical and sophisticated.
Tulips may be the stars of spring, but knowing how to care for them after flowering is the secret to enjoying them year after year.
✨ How long do tulips bloom?
Individual tulip flowers typically last 1–2 weeks in spring.
🌿 The leaves keep working
After the petals fall, the foliage continues to photosynthesise for another 4–6 weeks, storing energy in the bulb for next year’s flowers.
✂️ Deadhead immediately
Remove the spent seed pod once the petals drop to stop the plant using energy to produce seeds.
☀️ Leave the leaves
The green foliage acts like solar panels, feeding the bulb beneath the soil.
🍂 Cut back when brown
Only trim the leaves once they are fully yellow, brown and crispy.
📦 Lift and store
In the UK, many gardeners lift tulip bulbs in summer, dry them, and store them in a cool, dry place.
🌱 Replant in autumn
Plant bulbs between September and December for another spectacular spring display.
With a little patience and care, your tulips will reward you with beautiful blooms year after year. 🌷✨
