Sweet pea supports can be anything from plain old chicken wire to fancy steel obelisks but I much prefer to make a wigwam from pliable stems cut from the garden.

This one has been made from freshly cut hazel and is surprisingly sturdy. A little rustic, but so much nicer than sticks and string or plastic netting I think 😊

If you’re planning to grow climbers or tall flowers that need staking then now’s a great time to get the supports made or push stakes into the ground around your plants ready to support them later in the season. In my experience it’s so much harder to get it done in the summer when the ground is dry and the plants have already started to topple over.

If you didn’t sow sweetpeas last autumn you can sow them now in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill. Once germinated, get them into good light and protect from mice as they love them! They like a cool start and then a sunny position. Add lots of organic matter at planting time and remember to pick, pick, pick them to keep them flowering.

Our first real frost of the year on the last day of the year! 🥶 Anything not too hardy is tucked up and cosy though and can you believe I still have a few Lisianthus flowering 😳

Looking forward to sowing a few seeds this week that I like to get going early like chillies, sweetpeas, onions and leeks but if you don’t have a heat mat and grow lights then it’s better to wait a few more weeks. I’ll be sowing more seeds in February when the light levels are much better 😊

Happy New Year 🥳

My first ‘Winter White’ wreath of the year 😊
I love making these as an alternative to a more traditional wreath. This one included some beautiful dried Limonium for a frosty feel, snowberries, viburnum flowers and some pretty, white clay stars.

Nothing compares to a fresh foliage Christmas wreath especially if it’s made using beautiful, fragrant foliage from the garden 😊

If you’d like to learn how to make your own luxury wreath this year, using my tips and tricks to make it full and fabulous, then do get in touch. I have three places available on my workshop in December, Friday 5th, 10am till 1pm.

A slow Sunday afternoon was spent creating this foraged, wildlife friendly, seed head wreath that is not only beautiful but a great source of food for birds, and provides habitat for insects over winter 😊

If you fancy making your own then I’d definitely recommend making it outside if possible, it was quite a messy business 😂

Orlaya and Nigella 🤍💙

Two of the most beautiful cool season flowers that I grow and both are prolific self seeders. I have hundreds popping up all over 😊

The fluctuations in temperature at this time of year are a perfect aid to germination and these self sown plants will be much happier than any that I sow now.

Nigella doesn’t like to be moved as it has a long tap root so I’ll thin those out so there’s room for them to grow into big strong plants.

Orlaya is a bit more forgiving so I’ll relocate a few and let others stay where they wanted to be; keeping the roots intact, nourishing the soil, feeding the microbes is the best way to have healthy soil 👍
