I was recently asked to sing Slieve Gallion Braes at the funeral of a lovely lady who came from that area and lived most of her life in the UK. I hadn't ever heard the song before. I listened to many renditions to learn it-all with many different verses, stories and pronunciations. I suspect most people from Dublin like myself might not know this song. It's a simple song but like most Irish folk songs it tells the story of longing and or having to leave. I live in the UK myself now and when I sing these songs they do pull on my heart strings and make me long to go back to where I came from. It is heartbreaking to think how people years ago had no other choice. I have used video footage that people who visited Slieve Gallion took. Quite beautiful the videos are too-so Thank You to and (TikTok)
