We’re often asked why florist flowers cost more than supermarket bunches, and it’s a fair question. The biggest difference is that when you buy from a florist, you’re not just buying flowers — you’re paying for skill, care, time, and experience. Every arrangement is designed by hand, with thought, balance, and purpose, not mass-produced on a production line.

Florists carefully source fresh flowers in smaller quantities, often choosing specific varieties for quality, longevity, and suitability for each design. Unlike supermarkets, we don’t buy in huge volumes at the lowest possible cost — we buy what we believe will create the most beautiful result for our customers. Flowers are conditioned, prepared, and arranged properly, which helps them last longer and look their best.

Behind every bouquet is hours of unseen work: early starts at flower markets, conditioning stock, designing, wiring, taping, cleaning stems, creating mechanics, and safely packaging your flowers. Add to that shop overheads, refrigeration, wastage (flowers are a natural product), and years of training and experience — all of which ensure your flowers are exactly right for the occasion.

Supermarket flowers are designed for speed and scale and often sold below cost as a ‘lost leader’ to get customers through the door where they’ll buy other items. Florist flowers are designed for moments — celebrations, love, sympathy, and remembrance. When you choose a florist, you’re supporting a skilled craft, a small business, and a personal service that simply can’t be replicated on a shelf.

Thank you to everyone who chooses to support independent florists — it truly means more than you know
