Flowers from No.5

Flowers from No.5 An honesty box in Shelley, West Yorkshire offering seasonal flowers from a small, sustainable garden.

24/05/2026

I sowed the wildflower seeds on 21st Oct, 2025, in pots that were nearly full of old compost and topped with a mix of poor soil and sand.

I will water during the dry spells over the next couple of months but up until now, I've left the seedlings to survive the West Yorkshire elements. They are so strong and fuss-free!

You could try this even if you have a small space.

And this pot theatre isn't even in full sun all day and look what's happening!

The honesty box is out! Hand-wrapped posies of special-variety tulips that you won't find in the supermarkets. Pesticides-free, home-grown in our garden in Shelley, which we're nurturing for wildlife, especially pollinators. £5 a posy. Please let me know if you don't have cash and we can do online banking. I love meeting people who come to the honesty box and I'm so happy to have made such lovely friends through a shared love of flowers and community. All the funds go back into the garden to keep growing. Love to all, Alexandra x

I'm having so much fun with these wildflower pancakes!

1. Get some wildflower seed
2. Choose an area you can leave to grow wild
3. Cut a circle in the turf (or any shape!)
4. Spread the seed on a tray
5. Press the soil side of the turf onto the seed
6. Put the turf shape back into its spot, soil-side up.

With previous pancakes (some of the others you can see in the reel and earlier posts) I have also skipped the tray part and just sown the seed directly onto the upturned soil.

NB. I am not an experienced gardener and pretty much everything I do is an experiment. I'm constantly learning our soil and climate etc. in our new-build, clay-based garden (West Yorkshire, UK).

I'm excited to see how our wildflower patch grows. The seedlings from the pancakes I made two weeks ago are doing well. So far, so good!

Let me know if you try my pancake method!
