To wrap up the Independent Abbeydale ERF project - a collaboration between the Abbeydale Road Traders Group, CADS and Sheffield City Council - we ended in style with a stunning large-scale street art mural by Cam Tribes.
Cam Tribes draws inspiration from Soundsystem culture and the underground music scene, with his work appearing on canvases, event posters and T-shirts across the UK and beyond.
For this final piece, we asked him to adapt the new Independent Abbeydale branding into a bold mural that reflects the local area and the vibrant community behind it.

For the next commission of the ERF project, it was great to reconnect with long-time CADS collaborator Rob Lee for The Bear’s shutter artwork.
Rob Lee is a multi-disciplinary artist known for his large-scale, site-specific geometric art. His work explores the tension between nature and technology, manipulating perception through bold design.
The Bear is a beer emporium on Abbeydale Road, offering a curated selection of local, national, and international craft beer, wine, cider, and spirits—perfect for enjoying at home or in their cosy bar.
Rob went the extra mile by extending his geometric style beyond the shutter, incorporating it into The Bear’s entrance to create a truly striking piece.

Best Boy Bagels is known for its hand-rolled, freshly made bagels and an ever-changing menu that keeps customers coming back. Their new premises have taken them to new heights, drawing food lovers from across the city.

The second shutter mural completed as part of the Abbeydale Road Economic Recovery Fund project was Peter Griffiths’ piece for Oscar’s Barbershop.
Peter Griffiths is a visual artist working across multiple disciplines, including painting, printmaking, photographic prints, and installation. His public art commissions focus on a user-centered approach, integrating visual designs into architectural spaces.
Oscar’s Barber Shop is a well-loved spot on Abbeydale Road, run by Oscar, who specializes in skin fades and Turkish shaves.
To help Oscar settle into his new premises, Peter transformed the shop’s previously graffitied shutter into a bold and vibrant mural, adding character and energy to the storefront.

In 2009, CADS founder Steve Rimmer took on three studio spaces in Kelham Island in order to house equipment for his music promotions company. He soon realised that the spaces he had were slightly too big for him so he sought out other artists to take on two of the studios. Before long more people started to contact Steve enquiring about studio spaces; so much so that he decided to set up a studio complex in Shalesmoor, and so CADS was born!
Over the next few years CADS grew from taking on their first entire building (CADS Works) with 10 studios to providing over 86 studios across 6 buildings around Sheffield. As well as this, the main space on Smithfield became synonymous with Sheffield’s underground party scene with The Night Kitchen event space and its predecessor Dirty Little Secret earning acclaim both within the city and even in the national press, bringing some of the best artists from the UK and around the world to what was previously a quiet corner of Sheffield.
In 2013 CADS gained charitable status with its mission to provide affordable space to people regardless of their social or economic circumstances, however established they may be in their chosen field.
The activities of the charity have developed beyond the provision of affordable space to include programmes of support for various groups facing disadvantage. One such programme "Space Cadets" gives use of a studio free of charge for 6 weeks at a time to artists of limited financial means to pursue an idea or project.
In 2017 CADS took on The Abbeydale Picturehouse - a Grade II listed cinema building. Since taking on the building we have managed to host more events and activities than have taken place in the previous 20 years, with a more diverse range of artistic media than has ever been seen in the building. Our aim is to restore and re-energise the building into a multi-functional community arts venue. We are currently raising as much funds as possible in order to do necessary improvement works in order to obtain a premises licence.
