How do you improve a DJ who has been playing for 10 years?
Find out what they can do, what they like to do, and what they’re not so good at. Then plug the gaps - like the pieces of a jigsaw.
Bradley can mix... for hours. But that’s part of the problem! When he streams, he dips into different crates and plays tunes that you might only play when you’re streaming - set fillers, tunes you probably wouldn’t play in a club.
And because Brad doesn’t get to DJ anywhere else, he has got used to mixing for 2-3 hours without a different focus. It’s a bad habit, a trap any DJ can fall into.
Break the habit! Think about why you’re playing that tune. Do you love it? Is it a ‘killer’ tune? Can you mix it in a way other DJs haven’t thought of? Can you mix for 20 minutes and create a particular vibe - energetic, moody, summertime, chilled etc?
Always ask yourself, does that sound like I want it to sound? Is that the best mix I can do with those tunes? How can I make it more interesting/exciting for me/for the listener? How do I set myself aside from all the other DJs?
Sharpen your focus, hone your skills, choose tunes with purpose, take your audience on a journey, deliver every time you play!
