Over the last few months, The Warren Youth Project DJ sessions have evolved. By the time I arrive, the decks have already been set up by one or more of the DJs and the tunes are rolling.

Every week the room is full of DJs, which is causing me a bit of a headache trying to ensure everyone gets a fair amount of time on the decks!

But even after I leave, a few will stay to carry on mixing. It’s taken a long time to get here but what has been created goes way beyond what could have been expected.

The SYNC button on the RANE Performer only matches Tempo. It does not automatically synchronise your tunes from the drop, as it does on some other brands of DJ equipment.

Sporting her Emily's Battle with Batten t-shirt, Emily stepped up last night, using the pitch bend buttons after dropping tunes in, and it didn’t take her long to get to grips with it!

It shows her acceleration in progress - 6 months ago, she was reluctant to start using a different, bigger DJ controller. Now, she can scroll through crates and select tunes (with instructions), drop tunes in on time, use the pitch bend buttons to sync the tunes, chop faders and use the slip roll pads. All without any breaks in the flow of the music.

Big up The Sunshine Squad in Middleton-on-the-Wolds! The first of two sessions this month was an opportunity for young people to try DJ’ing for the very first time 😀

Every young person in attendance had a go, and there were definitely a few who showed potential. The highlight though was seeing the looks on some faces that said ’This is amazing, I never realised it was so much fun!'

Half-term culminated in a visit to Sunshine House in Hull https://www.chcpcic.org.uk/chcp-services/sunshine-house to meet their Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy group.

RUN THE TRACK! returned to Hessle Road Network during half-term, working with both the young mens’ and young womens’ groups.

You never know what to expect during school holidays, especially when the weather is so hot! You can meet 30+ young people and have a crazy session, or hardly anyone comes out at all!

But I always head out with the mindset ‘I could meet someone who falls in love with DJ’ing today’ and so often I meet a young person who has never tried it before, who doesn’t see themselves as talented or creative, but who displays a natural ability to adapt to the technology.

I think I met at least one, possibly two who could go on to a future in DJ’ing! Watch this space 👀

2 x sessions delivered at Astra Youth Centre Hull recently as part of their Duke of Edinburgh and Lord Mayors Award tasters.

Didn’t take many photos ‘cos we raced through 16 young DJs over the course of 3 hours!

RUN THE TRACK! is a community-based project funded by the Albemarle Music Centre Hull Music Service to find the DJs of the future by engaging with them in familiar surroundings.

Emily's Battle with Batten is now into the second phase of lessons funded by the Amber Trust.

The first phase ended with Emily recording her own DJ mix. We did this by creating a playlist of her favourite songs which are mostly movie soundtracks and pop, so they’re not designed for beat-matching.

Emily understood the need for playing the tunes in the right order, timing when to play the next tune and maintaining the flow.

Sitting next to her during this recording was a privilege I’ll never forget. Emily sings her heart out and at times it’s very powerful and emotional.

Now that she is confident with this DJ controller, we return to teaching DJ skills and mixing tunes. Watch this space!
