WHAT DO I ACTUALLY CARRY TO A WALKABOUT GIG?

People sometimes imagine a magician turning up to a gig with a huge case full of props…

The reality? I try to carry as little as possible. 😂

For a walkabout gig, everything has to be practical. I could be moving from table to table for several hours, so I need props that are reliable, reset quickly and fit comfortably in my pockets.

So what’s actually on me?

Playing cards – My trusty Bicycle cards are probably the most-used item I carry. They’re versatile, visual and can create loads of different effects.

Coins – Small, practical and perfect for close-up magic. No batteries, no complicated setup… just a bit of skill and a lot of practice!

Sponge balls – Great for groups because they’re visual, interactive and usually produce some brilliant reactions.

A little rope – Rope magic is incredibly practical for walkabout because it packs away to almost nothing but can create some very visual magic.

👛 My wallet – I carry a few carefully chosen pieces of magic in and around my wallet. It means I can produce some strong effects without carrying more equipment.

🎴 A few specialist props – Depending on the event, I might carry something like an Invisible Deck or another particular effect I’ve chosen for that audience.

And that’s really the secret…

I don’t need hundreds of tricks.

After more than 40 years performing magic, I’ve learned that it’s much more important to have a small number of strong routines that I know inside out than to carry everything I’ve ever learned.

The props are small.

The practice isn’t.

That’s what makes walkabout magic work — being able to walk up to a table with virtually nothing, interact with a group of people and create a moment they’ll hopefully remember long after I’ve walked away.

A little bit of magic history…

Many years ago, I was performing on the cabaret circuit in central London with the brilliant Freddie Valentine.

There were some fantastic nights, great audiences and plenty of memories — and I even got to perform in London’s West End a time or two. ⭐

This was back in the days of MySpace, before social media became the huge part of our lives that it is today!

Looking back, those were great times and some of my favourite memories from my years in magic.

The venues have changed, the magic has evolved, but that feeling of performing for a live audience hasn’t changed.

Still making memories, one trick at a time.
