"When you go to sea, do you think of me?"

Sylvie Nicol gazes out across the ocean from Man's Head to a few of her lines from our new short film "The Lights of St.Ives".

An Easter treat - eight "St.Ives maids" pictured on the Wharf in 1930 or 1931. Courtesy of Katrina Geraghty, daughter of Mary Paynter Stevens, front right in the photo.

Mary makes several appearances in our new musical film "The Lights of St.Ives", to be released next Friday, alongside her talented daughter Katrina, who is one of the lead vocalists. Not only that, but it turns out that archive photos used in the film also feature Mary's father and grandfather! In another photo, Mary is pictured with a huge basking shark on the quay in about 1928 - more on that later :)

Philip Thomas, whose mum is also in the photo, has been kind enough to let us know who's who in this lovely group:

Back row, left to right: Rebecca Quick, Irene Pollard (later Barber), Hannah Berriman, Wilmot Stevens* and Honour Hain Stevens*.
Front Row, i - r): Isabel Sisley (later Thomas), Dorothy Stevens*, Mary Paynter Stevens (later C**k).

As far as we know, three of the Stevens girls marked * were sisters. (Please let us know of any errors we might have made.)

We'd love you to add a comment if you are family or were a friend to any of these young ladies and can add something to our story. We know that Irene Pollard went on to marry music maestro John Barber and their daughter, our friend Irene Tanner, is well-known to many in the town.

A magical photo from 95 years ago - hope you enjoy it!
Happy Easter to all

(Our film "The Lights of St.Ives" will be available to view from next Friday - we'll post a link here. We're supporting The St.Ives Mariners Monument with this not-for-profit project.)

Paid a visit to Tom Leaper this week at the Penwith Gallery to see his stunning sculpture in progress. Tom and The St.Ives Mariners Monument project are achieving something truly magnificent that will engage locals and visitors alike for decades, if not centuries, to come.

We're supporting fundraising for this project with our short film about the fishing industry "Lights of St.Ives", to be released next Friday.

Pictured are Global Jamming's Treve Nicol, Tony Mason from the monument project (who was also involved in making our film) and the awesome sculptor himself.

The piece is about to go off for casting before its unveiling in September. Beautiful cast maquettes are available - please enquire at the gallery.

It was a real treat to learn about the process from start to finish and of Tom's deep appreciation of the rich artistic heritage within which his work will sit.

"However the seas do foam..."

Three of the "Lights of St.Ives" featured in our forthcoming short film of the same name (supporting the The St.Ives Mariners Monument fundraiser)

Coxwain Thomas Stevens, 2nd Cox D. Ninnis and Bowman N. Rowe of the RNLI Lifeboat James Stevens No 10, pictured in 1904.

Thomas Stevens went on to earn a Silver Medal for the rescue of 9 sailors from the SS Taunton in 1916. He was renowned as a man of the sea, his nickname being "Tommy Tilda" after his wife's name Matilda.

The crews of this famous self-righting vessel - which still exists - saved 227 lives during its service from 1900 till 1933, including 2 dogs. On one occasion she was launched 5 times and saved 40 lives all in one day.

Hard for most of us to imagine what courage and compassion it takes for these crews to do what they do - right to this day.

"When you go to sea, do you think of me?"

A wife and daughter wait onshore for the signs of their loved ones returning from another perilous venture out at sea.

We're excited about the release of our new short film -
"Lights of St.Ives" - in a couple of weeks.

Set to an original song and starring vocalists Sylvie Nicol (pictured) and local legend Katrina Geraghty, the film celebrates the St.Ives fishing industry past and present - and especially the role traditionally played by the whole community in catching, processing and packing off the countless millions of fish that have entered our harbour over the years.

We're proud to be supporting the The St.Ives Mariners Monument fundraising campaign with this project - do check out their fb page if you have a minute.

One and All - on Doble's Wall
Here's our new version of Johnny Barber's classic song, recorded in November 2024 in his daughter Irene's lounge. https://youtu.be/U4If9oAYP1I
Though we can't match the vocal prowess of Johnny's Minstrels, we were proud to work on this with Irene, her husband Edward and our great friend Katrina Geraghty - all well-known and much-loved figures in the St.Ives community.
Many thanks also to Tony Mason of St Ives Videos, film maker extraordinaire - it was a real pleasure working together on this.
We'd love to hear from you if you recognise faces in the photos.
We're planning another version for the song's centenary in 2027 - watch this space!

Once again Johnny Barber's St Ives anthem 'Doble's Wall' has worked its magic by bringing us together for this project. To cut a long story short, I contacte...

One man. One wall. Generations of folk taking their turn to pass some time there as the years, decades and centuries take their course.

Here's a snippet from the version featured on the brilliant Cornwall is Calling (1971) - sung "in harmonies so sweet" by Johnny and his Minstrels.

Our Story

Global Jamming St.Ives is the next chapter of Penwith Jamming. We are musicians who run musical events. Our aims are to have fun, bring people together and to support social and environmental causes/campaigns that we identify with.

We started out running free performance events for young musicians in our home area, including the ten Island Jams, marquees at Ayr Field Day and St.Ives Alive, a bunch of Acoustic Jams at local libraries and the like.

More recently we’ve been running drumming circles, acoustic music evenings and we’re involved in local samba drumming.

Our main focus at present is to work with musicians via our fb and Instagram pages to raise awareness and money to support Collective Aid, an NGO providing essential services to displaced people in Europe. Keep in touch via this page if you'd like to be involved in some way - or to involve us in something you’re doing.
