Getting it right in camera

One thing that has always been important to me as a wedding photographer is getting the photograph right in camera.

I don't want to photograph a wedding thinking, “I'll sort that out in Lightroom later.”

Of course, every photograph goes through my editing process. I adjust colour, contrast, exposure and all the little things that help create the finished image. But I don't want editing to be a rescue operation.

When I'm photographing a wedding, I'm constantly thinking about light, exposure, shutter speed, aperture and what's happening in front of me.

I tend to protect the highlights, often deliberately working around a half to 1 stop under exposure. Why? Because a slightly darker image can be lifted. A completely blown wedding dress, veil or white shirt can't magically have its detail put back.

The flash is there to complement the ambient light, not replace it.

I want you to look at your photographs years from now and still remember what the room actually felt like.

The lighting.
The atmosphere.
The laughter.
The people.
The little moments that happened without anyone asking them to happen.

For me, photography isn't about relying on software to make an image work.

It's about being prepared, understanding light, anticipating what's happening and making the photograph when the moment is there.

The editing comes afterwards.

Editing should enhance the photograph, not rescue it.

A lovely morning with Rachel & Matt for their pre-wedding shoot 🌿☀️

With just a couple of weeks to go until they say “I do”, it was the perfect chance to spend some time together, have a laugh, and get them comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

These relaxed sessions are never about stiff poses — they’re about capturing the connection between two people and creating natural photographs that feel like them.

The sunshine certainly showed off the beautiful greenery at Runcorn Town Hall grounds, even though their wedding celebrations will be taking place elsewhere. I’m already counting down the days and can’t wait to capture the next chapter of their story.

What a beautiful day celebrating John & Lacey’s wedding ❤️
From the lovely ceremony at St. Joseph’s Presbytery in Birkenhead to their relaxed post-wedding portraits at Runcorn Town Hall, it was a day filled with smiles, laughter and so much love.
It was also extra special for me personally, as I had the honour of photographing Lacey’s sister’s wedding a few years ago. Being asked back to capture another wedding for the same family is something I never take for granted, and it means the world to know my couples trust me with such important memories.
John & Lacey, thank you both for making me feel so welcome and for letting me tell the story of your day. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness together 🥂✨

While everyone else was watching the bride and groom, I spotted this moment unfolding and knew it was one worth capturing. A little bit chaotic, completely unscripted, and full of personality.
These are the moments I love most. The ones nobody plans for, nobody poses, and nobody could recreate if they tried.
Years from now, this photograph won't just remind them of how their wedding looked.
It'll remind them exactly how it felt.

A little note for anyone enquiring about wedding photography...
I believe in being completely transparent about pricing, which is why all of my packages and prices are clearly displayed on my website. It's there to help you decide whether I'm a good fit for your wedding before you get in touch.
So when I receive enquiries asking, "How much do you charge?" it does leave me wondering if the pricing page has been missed entirely!
Likewise, every now and then someone will tell me they've been quoted half of what I charge and ask if I can match or beat it.
The honest answer is no.
Photography isn't a commodity where every photographer offers the same thing at a different price. We all have different levels of experience, different approaches, different products, and different business costs. My pricing reflects the quality of service, experience, and work that I provide.
If another photographer is a better fit for your budget, that's absolutely fine. There are plenty of talented photographers working at different price points, and it's important to find someone who suits both your vision and your budget.
What I don't do is negotiate against other photographers or enter into a race to the bottom on price.
When you book me, you're booking me for my work, my experience, my approach, and the value I bring—not because I happened to be the cheapest option.
And that's perfectly okay.

"If my work resonates with you, fantastic. If it doesn't fit your budget, that's okay too. But my prices are my prices, and they're on the website for a reason." 📸🙂

One thing I never take for granted is the trust couples place in me on their wedding day.

Looking back at recent reviews, what means the most isn't just the praise for the photos—it's hearing that I helped people feel relaxed, made them laugh, got on well with their guests, and helped them enjoy the day.

I love photography, but weddings are about people. If I can deliver stunning images while making the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable, then I've done my job.

Thank you to all the couples who've invited me to be part of their day. It genuinely means the world.
