Yesterday a customer came into the shop looking for a gift. She wasn't really after cheese (I know, I know...) and while we had plenty of lovely things she could have bought, she mentioned olive oil.

Now, we do stock some beautiful Italian extra virgin olive oils, but instantly I thought, "You need to speak to Mike at Lazos Grove."

A few hours later, Mikes son Ben popped over to say thank you. Completely unnecessary, but very much appreciated. Meanwhile, he and Charlie disappeared into a lengthy conversation about football and the Champions League (Charlie being an Arsenal fan remains his only real flaw), while I got on with prepping for an evening catering job.

Fast forward a few hours and I arrive at the venue to set up. Guess who was there?

The olive oil customer.

And the gift she'd bought from Lazos Grove was for the host of the very party I was catering for.....

You couldn't make it up.

To make it even better, I only got the catering job because George at Meat Up Cambs recommended me in the first place.

I left the event after setting up with a full heart because it is hard running a small business at times and spinning lots of plates but it was a really lovely reminder that small businesses aren't just shops. We are a community. We recommend each other, support each other, and sometimes those connections come full circle in the most unexpected ways.

Royston is pretty special for that.

New Product Alert...(and I'm a little bit obsessed)

Introducing smoked salmon from Smokin’ Brothers.... beautifully silky, sashimi-style slices with a delicate smoke that (as luck would have it) pairs ridiculously well with Delice de Bourgogne.

We’ve been doing the "hard work" of quality testing it with Délice, Sheridan’s Irish brown bread crackers and a glass of fizz… purely for research purposes, obviously!

The sashimi-style belly slices from Smokin' Brothers are sustainably sourced, and the whisky and soy glazed smoked salmon is a combination of talents of Chef Gaetano Farucci, Former head chef of two Michelin-starred restaurant “Le Gavroche”, and Smokin' Brothers.

Because we love this so much it is on taste today in the shop.

Have you tried these stickly sweet Spanish Fig & Almond Cake and Date & Almond Cakes?

Naturally sweet, beautifully rich and packed with roasted almonds. No added sugar, no flour, just intensely fruity slices that were practically made for cheese.

They pair perfectly with Manchego, Blue cheese or simply with a glass of red.

These are dangerously moreish. Slice thinly… or don’t.

Raw cheese, live cultures, slow food and good company

We are so excited to be part of this weekend’s Nourish & Nurture festival in Cambridge with a table full of fermented goodness disguised as cheese (Spoiler Alert: it is actually cheese, but more on that later).

This is going to be a brilliant opportunity to hear from and meet some of the leading voices in the fermentation world exploring food, fermentation, wellbeing and nourishment including , and and who recently popped into the shop with friend of The Fig Catalina Brumann who is the owner of and the mastermind behind this exciting event.

We will have a selection of traditionally made cheese as well as our grazing boxes which include fruits, nuts, antipasti and of course cheese.

So what has cheese got to do with Fermentation I hear you ask....... Well fermentation comes in many forms, from kimchi and kombucha to sourdough, wine (phewww) and traditionally made cheese.

Cheese is one of the world’s oldest fermented foods and traditional milk cheese, shaped by bacteria, carry the character of their landscape, season and microbiome. From bloomy rinds to alpine styles and blues, every cheese tells the story of fermentation in its own delicious way.
