Another brilliant night at LAWMS, with a fantastic turnout and an atmosphere buzzing from the very first minute. This time we were treated to a lecture from the incomparable Liam Montier — a creator whose magic is bold, quirky, direct, and delightfully left‑field.

Liam took us on a whirlwind tour of his world: card magic, mentalism, and the wonderfully weird material that refuses to sit neatly in any category. His teaching style was clear, accessible, and packed with real‑world value. The first half delivered a rapid‑fire selection of tricks and ideas, and the second half opened into a superb Q&A session where members could dig deeper into Liam’s thinking and explore how to weave his material into their own acts. It was obvious how passionate Liam is about helping magicians grow — two hours flew by in what felt like minutes.

To close the evening, our Lectures Officer John Needham thanked Liam for an outstanding session and extended an open invitation for him to return. We echo that here: a huge thank‑you to Liam for sharing his creativity, insight, and wonderfully off‑beat magic with us. And of course, a big thank‑you to everyone who came along. Your support keeps LAWMS thriving and helps us keep the magic alive — one unforgettable night at a time.

LAWMS had the pleasure of hosting Chris Congreve for an evening of first class magic and shared learning — and what a lecture he delivered. Chris blew the room away with killer magic, smart thinking, and plenty of laugh out loud moments. His easy patter, clever thinking, smooth handling, and beautifully constructed routines — along with insider stories — left everyone baffled and thoroughly entertained.
When you get the chance to learn from a genuine master, you grab every second — and the lecture delivered in spades. The room was fully engaged throughout, with Members inspired to bring fresh ideas to their own performances. Our very own Luke and Rob were included in the performance.
Chris left the room buzzing with practical techniques, performance insights, and a clear reminder of why he’s regarded as one of the true masters of modern close up magic. A brilliant night of learning, laughter, and top tier magic from a real expert of the craft. A huge thank you to Chris for an unforgettable session — a wonderful night with a wonderful magician.

LAWMS Brings Magic and Music to the Rainbow Group
LAWMS was delighted to provide another great performance for the residents of the Rainbow Group. The session was a big success, with attendees marvelling at John's magical skills, humour, and engaging style. A key highlight of this performance was John's playing of an ancient recorder wind instrument, which had the room singing along and fully immersed in the experience.

The residents expressed how much they enjoyed the visit and how warmly they look forward to his return.

John, representing LAWMS, said he greatly values these opportunities to give back to the community and always leaves with a strong sense of fulfilment. He is already planning his next visit to the centre.

This event reflects LAWMS’ ongoing commitment to supporting and enriching our local community through performance, creativity, and connection.

Top Tier Magic at LAWMS: The Frank Allen Cup Close Up Competition
LAWMS packed out the room for this year’s Close Up Competition, drawing a record turnout for an evening bursting with razor sharp sleight of hand, bold misdirection, and plenty of laugh out loud moments.
With the well established Frank Allen Cup on the line, four performers took to the tables — each bringing a distinct style and personality:
• Magic Matt Redmond – funny, engaging, and always ready with a quick fire quip
• Dean Brindley – inventive magic with surprising twists and clever construction
• John Needham – a seasoned performer delivering elegant, beautifully structured routines
• Rob Sweetman – representing Sweet Deception Magic, blending charm, smooth humour, and technical precision
Guiding the night with warmth, wit, and effortless timing was Sergio Canales, whose compering kept the energy high and the audience fully locked in.
The tough task of judging fell to Nick Adams, Warren Treadway, and Lucy, who faced an incredibly close contest. Every competitor delivered polished, entertaining magic — making the final decision anything but easy.
After much deliberation, the judges awarded the Frank Allen Cup to Rob Sweetman, whose performance combined deceptive technique with playful confidence, winning over both the panel and the crowd.
A triumphant night for the Society — full of skill, creativity, and community spirit. With record attendance and an electric atmosphere, this year’s competition will be remembered as one of LAWMS’ strongest yet. Close up magic in Warwickshire is clearly thriving.

April 1st 2026: Another great night at the Leamington & Warwick Magical Society! The meeting called on two of its members, Matt and Steve, to share their skills and they gave two cracking mini‑lectures. Matt blew us away with his knowledge and skills on using rings, making it look effortless. Definitely inspired a few of us to give it a go. Steve took us on a whirlwind tour of magic’s history and evolution, sprinkled with brilliant examples from his own routines. Funny, insightful, and properly engaging. Top work from both of them leading to a night full of ideas, inspiration, and proper magical enthusiasm. Big thanks to both of them and to Linda for the photos proving it was a very successful evening!

Magic for Every Age at Rainbow Dementia Support!

LAWMS magician Kevin Goodwin lit up the Stratford Rainbow Group audience last week with moments of pure wonder. Proof that you’re never too old—or too young—to feel the joy of live magic. Huge thanks to Kevin giving up his spare time and to Linda Po***ck, LAWMS Welfare Officer, for making it happen. Linda is passionate about supporting Rainbow’s dementia specialists and their vital cognitive stimulation work which helps improve symptoms and slow deterioration. President of LAWMS Dean Brindley said Kevin is our 3rd member to visit and perform with the Rainbow organisation as at LAWMS as we are committed to sharing the joy of magic with external groups and helping build happier, more connected communities.

Wednesday 26th November at St Patrick’s Irish Club, Adelaide Rd, Leamington Spa. The LWMS are pleased to welcome Wayne Goodman, the lecture is primarily on Stage and Close Up magic and promises to be an excellent evening. Members should find this entertaining as well as educational. 19:30 for a 20:00 start. Visiting magicians fee applies.
