New Panteg 23 Rhymney 48
A fine scoreline and a 7 tries to 3 tally for Tyler Evans' boys in the sunshine, with some great offloading tries and determined running, but also some pretty rusty, scrappy patches and penalty bother at the breakdowns as the work-ons for coaches and team in the next fortnight 'off'. Lively New Panteg wouldn't lie down, and with some ropey hands for some of the first half there were fewer points than looked likely, not helped by the ruling out of Liam Davies' 'try' and a possible obstruction on Lewys Bassett as he reached for another. Instead, Panteg went back upfield and got a penalty and a missed-tackle try to peg back Joey Buckley and Ieuan Morgan's touchdowns and Liam's penalty and two conversions to just a 17-13 interval lead. A purple patch on the resumption, though, showed a much more clinical edge and decided the game with three great tries in nine minutes from Connar Kier, Jack Chamberlain and Jack Worgan, one converted by Davies. Some scrappy midfield stuff followed, subs were made, the hosts got a pair of late tries but so did the Brewers, via Tom Elliott and Olly Hulbert, both improved by Davies. Next League game is due to be away at Fleur de Lis on Sat 22nd March. The Division 3 Cup semi-final has been fixed by the WRU for Saturday 12th April, v Cardigan at neutral Cwmavon, near Port Talbot. Cheers, Akky
