New Panteg 23 Rhymney 48
A fine scoreline and a 7 tries to 3 tally for Tyler Evans' boys in the sunshine, with some great offloading tries and determined running, but also some pretty rusty, scrappy patches and penalty bother at the breakdowns as the work-ons for coaches and team in the next fortnight 'off'. Lively New Panteg wouldn't lie down, and with some ropey hands for some of the first half there were fewer points than looked likely, not helped by the ruling out of Liam Davies' 'try' and a possible obstruction on Lewys Bassett as he reached for another. Instead, Panteg went back upfield and got a penalty and a missed-tackle try to peg back Joey Buckley and Ieuan Morgan's touchdowns and Liam's penalty and two conversions to just a 17-13 interval lead. A purple patch on the resumption, though, showed a much more clinical edge and decided the game with three great tries in nine minutes from Connar Kier, Jack Chamberlain and Jack Worgan, one converted by Davies. Some scrappy midfield stuff followed, subs were made, the hosts got a pair of late tries but so did the Brewers, via Tom Elliott and Olly Hulbert, both improved by Davies. Next League game is due to be away at Fleur de Lis on Sat 22nd March. The Division 3 Cup semi-final has been fixed by the WRU for Saturday 12th April, v Cardigan at neutral Cwmavon, near Port Talbot. Cheers, Akky

Recent Memory Lane pics went down well and the Old Boys' afternoon last Saturday was great, so a few more bits and pieces here - though mainly for what Meredydd James dubbed 'Geriatrics Corner'! Here are: the programme for David Pulsford's Welsh Trial at Tredegar in 1961; the late Dai Viney and the late great Welsh Lion Brian Price opposing each other for Rhymney 13 v Cross Keys 6, to open the new Park pitch, 1959 - look at the tip! ; another year's Rhymney v JH Powell's XV game, probably 1972; also v the Welsh Academicals 1971; the Ben Francis Cup win v Newport, 1998; yes, that is Martin Burridge v Merthyr, plus Mike Sutton, Wayne Morgan, Peter Godfrey, Buzzard and Dale Z.... ; and can you name all the captains in the old club? Cheers, Akky.

Rhymney 37 Nantyglo 5
A very good controlled show in the fog and mud at the park, where useful visitors Nantyglo stuck at it and made the hosts work for forward supremacy and what was eventually a well deserved five try bonus point win - especially since Rhymney played the second half with 14 men, a sub flanker having seen red. The Brewers have got some go forward these days, and with Liam Davies pulling the strings and kicking well from the tee, and some good support and handling up front and behind (and fewer penalties), they led 18-5 at the break, tries by full back Ieuan Morgan and skipper Tyler Evans, a conversion and two penalties by Davies. Nanty snatched a try back on the restart, but with Jack Chamberlain leading the charge, the scrum solid and Sonny Meredith and Co getting up in the linesout, there was ball for wings Connar Kier and Keane De'ath and Morgan again to boost the try tally. Davies kicked two conversions, not bad considering it was hard to see the posts through the fog. That's my excuse for the pics, too: all five tries are there, honest! Next scheduled game is in the League at New Panteg on Sat March 1st. Well done lads. A grand turnout as well for the latest Meredydd James Old Boys afternoon, ages from 8 to 80-odd enjoying buffet, drinks, laughs and exaggerated memories! How many can you name in the lounge photo section? Cheers, Akky

With the weather actually looking as if it will cooperate, our game v Nantyglo at the Park on Saturday will hopefully provide a great chance for a big attendance - not only there, but also for Meredydd James' Old Players' reunion. From 1.30 on we hope to see Brewers of all vintages for a drink, some eats, a laugh and a song, while hoping the current squad can push on at the top of the table - and in the semi-final of the Cup (date & venue tbc). Here are some RRFC teams from the 60s on: how many of you can get there on Saturday? Akky.

Which of you can remember 55 years ago? (Or 55 minutes ago?!) John ‘Noddy’ Powell, General Manager Ebbw Steelworks, stationary fly half at 50, used to take charity sides of good players to charity games at Rhymney and elsewhere. Note the teams. I well remember playing against Brian Thomas in one of them. Thanks to Malcolm Cross for the programme. Akky.

A few days after playing there in 2025, what pops up but this programme from 30 years back, Oakdale v Rhymney in the Heineken League Div 4, which was the fifth tier of all Welsh rugby then, 1994-5, just before the game went professional. Look at the teams in the Division: some ups and downs since! Also some very good players in both outfits! Akky.
