Rhymney 21 Blackwood 19
Well for once and at last the narrow win went Rhymney's way after a breathless, nervy, entertaining clash at a sunny breezy Park. The Brewers' first Division One win came at the death, for after a strong start and an eventual 18-7 lead on 50 minutes, an awful five minute spell saw the visitors gifted 10 points and the advantage. There were thrills, spills and near things at both ends after that, but eventually a concerted spell of pressure lad to a home penalty at the posts and Tom Elliott banged it over. There was still time for the kick off, which this time was safely taken, and the ball was booted triumphantly off at the ref's final whistle. Lynch and Barber's Wood were second best up front for lots of the first half, when a Liam Davies penalty and tries by Connor Gregory and skipper Tyler Evans gave the Brewers a 13-7 cushion after the visitors had clinically exploited a turnover with a sharp converted try. Blackwood's backs looked dangerous every time they got space or misplaced kicks to run back, and though Tom Elliott punished one of their errors, Davies hit the post for the second time on the day with the attempted conversion, and then those nearly-fateful mad minutes saw Wood back suddenly back into a 19-18 lead. Useful scrum half Ieuan Morgan was among injury subs for the Brewers, and the Wood pack started edging the scrums and carrying with power and intent. Great cover tackling, after less strong first-up efforts, saved two likely visiting scores, and then the home eight turned the screw, won that penalty and the nervous home crowd could breathe again. It's Ynysddu away next Saturday. Many thanks to Blackwood for a fine derby in good spirit, the return of their welcome 'old face' coaches, and for the splendidly cleaned dressing rooms they left. Later on Meredydd James; Old Boys afternoon & evening came the tie and cap presentations to many of this deserving squad who have seen the club regain a loftier place in the pyramid.
