On 5th September I was honored to be chosen as Lauren and Gavin's wedding photographer. It was the fourth (!) attempt at their wedding. I was originally booked for June 2020 but something got in the way... Oh yes, a lockdown. Then it was rescheduled for September 2020 and something got in the way again... Oh yes, another lockdown! Then it was set for 10th July 2021 and it seemed as if it would go ahead but it turned out that date was still within the 30 persons per wedding restriction so it was postponed again but finally it went ahead on the 5th September. It was a wonderful, joyous day. Thank you so much for choosing me as your photographer and all the best to the two of you and your wonderful family!

I had the pleasure to be chosen as Danielle and Stephen's photographer on their wedding day. The day began with the bridal preparations, an aspect I always love. After a glorious morning the heavens opened during the session at Kirkleatham Museum but we adapted and the umbrellas did their job. Luckily during the afternoon a little break in the clouds allowed for a quick session on the beach in Redcar. All the best to you two!

I have room in my diary for more, if you are looking for a wedding photographer or know someone else who is looking for one please take a look at my work and if you like what you see drop me a message!

A few weeks ago I had been chosen as the photographer at Juliette and Andrew's wedding at the beautiful Judges Hotel at Kirklevington Hall. The weather despite the not so good forecast was beautiful so the ceremony was outside. It was a small wedding full of beautiful moments that were a pleasure to capture!

I have room in my diary for more, if you are looking for a wedding photographer or know someone else who is looking for one please take a look at my work and if you like what you see drop me a message!

Part two of my Loftus Alum Quarries walk is the area beneath the sandstone area that I posted about in the previous post and which is made up of alum shale and that part is like being on another planet.

I was absolutely gobsmacked by the beauty of it. It is a barren, grey colored expanse with bright red and orange accents of the burnt shale which was thrown away as waste. I felt like an astronaut walking on the moon at some places, the perfect desolation, silence and the views just took my breath away. I will undertake more walks to explore the remnants of alum quarrying along the coast and I will go more prepared.

This time I didn't really plan for it but just walked off on a hot day without something to drink and after a few hours of trekking in the blazing sun had to turn back. I will come back better prepared and will explore more methodically but it has whet my appetite and I want to see more!

I was asked to do a product shoot for the Wharton Arms Hotel in Skelton-in-Cleveland. The owners have access to generic shots of the drinks they serve for promotional purposes and wanted a more personalized look. I took pictures of the drinks they serve with the bar as background to give every photo a sense of place.

Worth mentioning is that in the middle of the shoot Gerhard Pieterse (one of the owners who, like myself is also a Redcar Coastguard team member) and myself got called out. That meant stowing everything away quickly and we were on our way to get stood down on route. Quick return to the bar, take the camera back out and continue shooting!

This is part one of two. Last week I went down to the Loftus Alum Quarries for the first time. I have wanted to visit this place for a long time and on my way back from Staithes via Boulby Bank I finally stopped and took a first look.

This is one of the places along the Yorkshire coast where alum, in the 16th-century essential in the textile industry as a fixative for dyes was extracted. Apparently it was a laborious process which took months to produce an aluminium sulphate liquor to which then human urine was added. There was such a huge demand for urine that it had to be imported from other parts of the country. The urine was used to ultimately settle the alum crystals in the aluminium sulphate liquor. I imagine it will have smelled a wee bit funky along the coastline. 😂 The last alum works closed in 1871 when synthetic alum was invented, then subsequently the creation of aniline dyes which contained their own fixative (Source: National Trust).

The cliffs along the quarry look like some giant has been angrily chipping away at the rocks. Huge boulders are strewn all over the place and give this place a weird beauty.

Last Sunday I had the pleasure to do a family shoot for Lindsay and her family which include four dogs. The location was the beautiful fishing village of Staithes. We had a relaxed walk and a chat, took the pictures and let the dogs play on the beach so I could take some shots of them in action. That is the way I like to do my shoots, of course there is some posing involved but I like it to be as relaxed and informal as possible.

Please contact me if you would like a similar shoot for your family or maybe just for your dogs!

The Rosedale East Mines in the North York Moors were part of an extensive mining operation with a huge seam of iron ore present in the area. It ranged from Farndale (not strictly in Rosedale but working the same seam and using the same railway for transportation of the ore), Hollins, Lane Head, Rosedale East, Rosedale West to Sheriff's Pit (also called Sheriff's Mine). The combined output from the mines reached a peak in 1873, when 560,000 tonnes (620,000 tons) was extracted. Unfortunately not soon after the decline that struck almost every mine in the area also hit these mines and all that remains are a few reminders of that era. It is an impressive piece of industrial heritage in this National Park and a place worth visiting. I was last there in October 2018, in the Summer of 2019 it was extensively restored after multiple collapses of the stone work and it looks better than ever.

The steelworks at the South Gare in Redcar is a never ending source of shapes and textures for me. In the golden light of a Spring sunset it offered some great opportunities for some abstract photography.

Cattersty Sands at Skinningrove is a little hidden gem along the coastline. What most of us might perceive as cliffs are in fact huge slagheaps (a hill composed of mining debris). It creates this almost alien landscape and the slag and rock formations cradle this little bay with a beautiful beach. One must enter through an opening where once ironstone was ferried by train to the jetty where ships would transport the ore. This is another place where industry and nature form a hugely interesting combination. Also on the beach is an old pillbox (bunker) that has toppled down from the top of the cliff. This often gets buried by the ever shifting sands but at the moment is fully visible.

The North York Moors was like a siren call to me this week and as you're supposed to do with siren calls you fall under the spell and wander (or in my case drive) towards it. Lots of haze on Wednesday that made for beautiful atmospheric perspective. This place always makes me smile, have I already said I have missed it in previous posts? I just might have... 😂
