As part of my accreditation with I do regular waste audits in my business to see how I can reduce the waste I produce as much as possible. Obviously recycling is a great second option, but reducing the waste in the first place is even better! These are four ways I’ve managed to reduce my waste in the last year:
1. I’ve always bought locally grown, but by increasing the percentage of locally grown I buy, it has meant less packaging in the form of boxes and plastic or paper wrap that my flowers arrive in. And with the added bonus of beautiful flowers and a reduce carbon footprint you can’t go wrong!
2. You may have seen that I’ve designed a new bowl with my friend Sophie .inside.my.head as part of our new venture .dish.girls - I’ve previously always used re-useable bowls with chicken wire to hold the flowers in place but have got so fed up with needing to use single use plastic tape to hold the chicken wire that I decided to create a bowl that didn’t need any tape at all! And I’m so excited to be using this in lots of my weddings this year!
3. I previously delivered my bridal bouquets in branded paper gift bags, which while recyclable, would always just get discarded, as let’s face it, the flowers are the important bit! Now I just deliver in a glass vase which the bride can keep for her bouquet and everyone’s happy including the environment!
4. I like to have your proposals on hand on the wedding day to make sure I’ve covered all the bases and haven’t forgotten anything but this would use a lot of paper and ink which would just have to go straight in the recycling after the wedding, so now I make sure I have an up to date digital copy on my phone so I can keep referring back to it during the day.
I’m moving towards my aim to become zero landfill waste as a business and will keep reviewing my waste plan to ensure I’m doing everything I can.
Have you had any great ways you’ve reduced waste at home or work? I’d love to hear them!
