My lovely time spent with both URBOND Youth Development Programme and the Moriah Parents Support Group where we were talking all this SEND family support ππ«Άππ
Today I had the honour of sharing my SEND parent, grandparent, and foster parent journey with the amazing, caring, and dedicated mothers at the Moriah Family Support Group held at URBOND Youth Development. I feel it's a good time to share my poem about my son again. He gives me so much inspiration π«πππ«Ά
For My Son
How do I begin to describe my son?
My beautiful boy, the special one
He didn't ask for such a bumpy start
But he won us all with his enormous heart
A fragile baby, meek and mild
There was something amiss in my beautiful child
He wouldn't settle or take a feed
What to do to fill his need
Hospital visits became the norm
With lots of tests the doctors performed
They couldn't tell what was wrong with him
The light in his eyes grew sad and dim
He struggled to breathe too many a time
What was happening in this world of mine
Then suddenly, the doctors joy
As she declared, 'I can help your boy'
A poorly chest and a problem with sound
He was nearly deaf, that's what they found
Before his first year was done
The doctors agreed one by one
An operation to help him hear
That's what we need to do my dear
I signed the form with hope and fear
For my beautiful boy so precious, so dear
Off he went to that clinical hell
They said that soon all would be well
The hours passed, it was hard to bear
When somebody shouted, 'are his parents there'
We hurried along to the recovery room
But where was my boy, why all the gloom
'Something went wrong' I heard her say
The doctors had whisked my baby away
To intensive care we next were sent
That's where they had him, that's where he went
His tiny body, so flat, so still
My little boy was terribly ill
So many tears and too many words
His lungs collapsed was all I heard
Tubes and wires attached to his skin
He didn't even look like him
A ventilator breathed for him
His life was hanging, his chances so slim
But doctor Gee worked day and night
To keep my little boy so bright
The light returned, he started to heal
I prayed to the Lord, I offered a deal
I'd do anything to have my baby back
I offered my life, yes, even that
But no one could know, that strength of prayer
Could help bring about a miracle cure
My son grew stronger, he breathed once more
Another week later, we walked out the door
Each day that passed my little boy grew
He could hear at last, that much we knew
But words didn't come, he didn't progress
But for me, my perfect boy was no less
More doctors came, they just weren't sure
But something was clear, he needed more
Special school was the answer they said
We'll teach him signs for words instead
My little boy flourished, frustration eased
He smiled, he laughed, he was ever so pleased
He was the Apple of everybody's eye
He didn't even need to try
His loving way for me was clear
But for others he hated to be near
He was awkward in groups, ever so shy
But we couldn't work out just why
He was diagnosed with ADHD
Then learning needs and autism, all three
But even though he struggled to learn
He was the kindest, funniest, person we'd known
Teenage years brought many a trial
He rejected his titles, he was in denial
But he soldiered on with determined grace
To find his path to a better place
He achieved so much, more than he'll tell
He's loving and gentle, so humble as well
A testament to his tenacious spirit
He's a gentleman, but he doesn't see it
He's a daddy now and I'm proud to say
That in this role he found his way
His daughter is autistic, well, what do you know
She lights up his world with a wonderful glow
He's excellled as a father, he devotes his days
To loving another, showing her great ways
To live a life with pleasure and joy
I'm super proud of my autistic boy
A mothers love is beyond compare
I'll fight for my boy, I'll always be there
To help and guide him, protect him, too
I'll love him forever, that's what I'll do
Picture is of my adult autistic son on our summer holiday. He is helping his autistic daughter to shoot a bow and arrow. I see the love, care, and pride in his expression ππ«Άπ
