We're proud to have Ted as part of The Caring Kitchen family. 💙

For 10 years, Ted has volunteered his time to help keep our kitchens running smoothly, always with a smile and a willingness to help wherever needed.

As part of Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating Ted and thanking him for his incredible dedication and support.

Every Wednesday for the last 10 years, Ted has walked through the doors of The Prince of Wales Hospice ready to help. 💖

While many people may never see the work he does behind the scenes, Ted plays a huge role in keeping our The Caring Kitchen Catering running smoothly. From washing endless dishes to keeping kitchens clean, stocked and organised, no task is ever too much trouble, and he always does it with a smile.

“His presence brings a sense of calm and reassurance to both staff and patients.”

His calm, kind and reliable presence has become such an important part of life at the Hospice for both staff and patients alike.

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re proud to celebrate Ted and the incredible difference he has made over the last decade.

Ted was recently nominated for Room to Reward in recognition of his dedication and commitment as one of our amazing volunteers.

In 2024, the decision was made to strengthen our recruitment strategy by developing our own chefs from within. As part of this initiative, Will Smith was recruited as an apprentice.

During his apprenticeship, Will worked closely under our Sous Chef Rob, with the wider kitchen team supporting his development through guidance, support, and feedback that helped him grow in confidence and skill.

On 16 April 2026, Will completed his final practical assessment and successfully passed his Commis Chef qualification, achieving a distinction across all assessed areas.

Will said:
“Within the last year, I feel like I have grown into my role and furthered my experience through completing day-to-day tasks. I really enjoy working as part of the kitchen team. When it comes to outside catering, I particularly enjoy the larger events we’ve done over the year, including HMS Ceres and Wakefield Cathedral. These events have offered great learning opportunities and have helped me continue to improve.”

Huge congratulations to Will on this outstanding achievement. Read the full story here https://www.pwh.org.uk/stories/from-apprentice-to-commis-chef/
