British Baker will be announcing finalists in 13 categories during the course of the week but we will have to wait for the winners to be revealed at the awards ceremony on Saturday 23 August

Back in the day, bakers would use the frothy foam from beer brewing — known as barm — to leaven their dough. It gave rise (literally!) to a soft, flavoursome loaf and is actually where the famous barm cake gets its name. Northern bakers, we’re looking at you!
