Elton Hall

Elton Hall Well worth a visit and often described as "a hidden gem". Wedding and events venue.

A romantic, part Gothic house, belonging to the Proby family since 1660 with formal gardens and unspoiled parkland.

The "Who cleans the silver?" question reminded us of William Short, formerly butler to 5th Earl and Countess of Carysfort. William's last descendants, grandaughters Linda and Joy donated his much-prized silver pocket watch - a gift from the Countess - back to Elton Hall. It's now on display.

We love hearing stories about people connected to Elton Hall in the past. Do you have a relative who worked at the Estate in the past, convalesced here during either the First or Second World War or spent time lodged in the stables as a Land Girl? Let us know and share their stories.

Did you feel it? Just a splash of rain this morning made us feel we were very, very in tune with the national obsession on weather.

Along with the lavender the other part of the garden which really loves the heat is the Orangery garden. A Mediterranean feel, bananas, olives and oleanders planted in the borders and always a few degrees warmer than the rest of the garden.

Lavender. If there's one plant that doesn't mind hot, dry conditions, this is it. In the Flower Garden, the bees have been having a feast on an exceptional amount of flowers.

The colour has been magnificent this year on the borders rising around the steps to the Drawing Room so much so that we've decided to plant the borders up the lawn steps to match. The plants may look small now but give them a couple of seasons and we're confident they will be equally dramatic.

And on the subject of benches, did you remember where the one Richard was painting should have been? Yes, in a cool nook behind the little fountain in the Orangery garden, complete with its matching planters.

Doesn't the space look better now they’re back?
