I can confirm tortoises 🐢 definitely recognise you 🥰
Cusco seeks out and follows me at every opportunity when he’s playing out of his tank. If he’s ignored he attempts to climb my legs to get attention, utterly adorable ☺️

How Tortoises Recognize You

▪️Smell : Their Primary Sense
Tortoises rely heavily on their sense of smell. They can distinguish familiar scents, including their owner’s skin, clothing, or even the food you regularly offer. This helps them associate you with safety and nourishment.

▪️Sound : Low Frequency Awareness
While tortoises don’t have external ears, they detect vibrations and low frequency sounds. They may respond to your voice, footsteps, or feeding sounds, especially if these are consistent over time.

▪️Memory Capabilities
Tortoises have surprisingly good memory for :
- Spatial navigation : remembering where food, shelter, or water is located.
- Individual recognition : associating specific people with positive or negative experiences.
- Routine cues : linking sounds, smells, or visual patterns with feeding or care.

Some studies show tortoises can retain learned behaviors and associations for months or even years, which is impressive for reptiles.

Why They Respond to Their Owners

Tortoises may show recognition and trust through :
- Approaching you when you enter the room.
- Staying calm when handled by familiar hands.
- Following your movements or watching you.
- Eating more readily in your presence.

These behaviors aren’t just instinct, they reflect learned comfort and familiarity. Over time, your tortoise may even show preference for you over stranger.

In Denmark, children between the ages of 6 and 16 take part in a unique weekly class called “klassens tid” or “class time.” Unlike traditional classes that focus on tests or grades, this time is dedicated to fostering kindness, empathy, and a deeper understanding of others. Children sit together in a safe space to talk openly about their feelings, practice listening to each other, and discuss ways to solve small problems before they turn into bigger issues. This initiative encourages children to reflect on their actions and learn how they impact others, creating a more inclusive and compassionate community.

The lessons go beyond human relationships. Danish schools emphasize the importance of caring for animals, reinforcing that empathy extends to all living things. From nurturing pets to understanding the needs of wildlife, students are taught to appreciate the world around them, fostering a sense of responsibility and respect for all creatures. By including animal welfare in their education, Denmark is ensuring that future generations not only value human connections but also have a deep respect for the natural world.

This innovative approach to education aligns perfectly with Curejoy's mission of holistic well-being—promoting not only physical health but mental and emotional wellness too. Empathy, kindness, and understanding are essential for a healthy life. Just like in Denmark, we can all take small steps toward creating more compassionate communities by adopting the same principles in our daily interactions. Whether through kindness to others or caring for our environment, every small act contributes to a healthier, more harmonious world. 🌱🐾

Turtles and tortoises are both reptiles from the same order, but they thrive in different habitats.
Turtles live mostly in the water, with flat, streamlined shells and flippers that help them swim efficiently.
Tortoises, by contrast, live on land, with dome-shaped shells and strong, sturdy legs built for walking.
Turtles are omnivores that eat both plants and small animals, while tortoises feed mainly on vegetation.
Despite their differences, both share a tough shell, a slow pace, and an ancient lineage that connects them as close evolutionary relatives.
