Killer Instinct Crowned Weston Skittles Champions for Second Year Running
Gloucestershire skittles team Killer Instinct pulled off a surprise victory at the Serious About Events Weston Skittles Weekend, securing their second tournament title in just their second appearance at the popular event.
Despite arriving at the finals after a mixed run of scores earlier in the weekend, the team produced some outstanding performances when it mattered most.
Captain Karen “Kaz” Lewis said: “It was a surprise to win the tournament although we had won our games leading up to the finals, they weren’t the best scores. On the day we had some crazy scores with one player getting five spares on five legs!”
One of the standout performers was Chris Birt, who was named man of the match in the final after scoring an incredible 71 with five spares. He came agonisingly close to becoming the tournament’s highest male scorer, narrowly missing out on the top spot of 74.
The team have been playing together for around four years after first getting together “for a laugh” as a group of Pokémon players. Since then, they have risen rapidly through the ranks of the Gloucester league, starting out in Division Three or Four before recently earning promotion to the elite Premier League.
Their success on the skittles alley is built as much on friendship as talent.
“Our team works well together because we have a laugh, lots of banter and, when needed, alcohol!” joked Kaz.
The squad also has several family connections. Chris Birt and Neil Birt are twins, while “Captain Bubbles” Kaz and Chris “Birty the five spare man” Birt are partners. The team’s home sticker even features the son of one of the players.
Away from skittles, team members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including FE plumbing and electrical teaching, electrical work, delivery driving, golf trolley manufacturing and supervision roles. Several players also compete for other local skittle teams.
The team also boasts sporting success beyond skittles, with captain Kaz recently winning women’s team gold medal and team trophy honours in traditional thumb ring archery.
Killer Instinct are already looking ahead to next year’s Weston weekend where they hope to complete a remarkable hat-trick of titles.
