From sunscreens that can affect coral reefs to clothing, cleaning products, and personal care items, many of the products we use daily have hidden environmental consequences. In this fascinating session, Laura will explore the connections between our lifestyles and the natural world, highlighting how small, practical changes can help reduce our impact on ecosystems and biodiversity.

This talk is perfect for anyone interested in wildlife conservation, sustainability, environmental protection, biodiversity, and making informed choices that benefit nature.

Join us at Saving Species Conference 2026 to hear from inspiring conservationists, scientists, educators, and environmental professionals dedicated to protecting species and habitats across the globe.

🌊 We concluded Day 2 of the South West Marine Fest with an insightful presentation from Jessica Churchill-Bissett of the Marine Management Organisation.

Jessica explored how everyday marine activities, from boating and paddleboarding to diving and wildlife watching, can impact Marine Protected

Areas and the species and habitats they support. She introduced the MMO's national programme to better understand, monitor, and manage these pressures through research, stakeholder collaboration, education, and targeted conservation measures.

The presentation highlighted the importance of balancing public enjoyment of the marine environment with the protection of some of our most valuable coastal ecosystems, demonstrating how regulators, communities, and marine users can work together to support healthier seas for the future.

Thank you, Jessica, for bringing Day 2 to a close with a fascinating look at the future of marine management and conservation in England. πŸŒπŸ’™

🐬 Our next presentation on Day 2 of the South West Marine Fest was delivered by Rebecca Dudley from the University of Plymouth.

Rebecca introduced attendees to the bottlenose dolphins that inhabit England’s south coast, a small and socially distinct population living within one of the busiest and most heavily used marine environments in the world.

The presentation explored what long-term monitoring programmes and citizen science initiatives are revealing about the lives, movements, and social structure of these remarkable animals. Rebecca highlighted how ongoing research is helping scientists better understand the challenges facing this vulnerable population and why continued monitoring is essential for their conservation.

Attendees also learned about the importance of collaboration between researchers, conservation organisations, and local communities. Through partnerships and shared data collection efforts, new evidence-based conservation strategies are being developed to help safeguard these iconic dolphins for future generations.

Thank you, Rebecca, for sharing your fascinating research and for highlighting the vital role that science and community involvement play in protecting one of the South Coast's most treasured marine species. πŸ¬πŸ’™πŸŒŠ

There’s something about being by the sea that brings us peace, perspective, and happiness. The ocean connects us all β€” and today is a reminder of why protecting it matters so deeply.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we proudly hosted the 5th Annual Southwest Marine Fest Conference, bringing together passionate individuals, organisations, researchers, and communities all dedicated to making a difference for our marine environment.

At Conservation Chat UK, we are also proud to run our own cetacean conservation project, Operation Cetacean, working to raise awareness and help protect whales, dolphins, and porpoises in our waters.

Every conversation, every action, and every shared effort helps create a healthier future for our oceans.
Happy World Oceans Day

🌊 Our next presentation on Day 2 of the South West Marine Fest was delivered by Chloe Nunn from Devon County Council.

Chloe explored the complexities of managing our coastal environments, where people, wildlife, habitats, industry, recreation, and culture all come together in a shared space. Balancing these diverse interests requires effective collaboration, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to protecting our coastal ecosystems while supporting the communities that depend upon them.

Drawing on her role as Exe Estuary Management Partnership Officer, Chloe provided valuable insights into the work of coastal partnerships across the South West and highlighted the importance of cooperation across local, regional, national, and international levels. The presentation examined both the challenges and opportunities that arise when coordinating conservation, governance, and stakeholder interests across different sectors and geographical boundaries.

Attendees gained a deeper understanding of how collaborative approaches can help address complex environmental issues and support the long-term sustainability of our coasts and estuaries.

Thank you, Chloe, for sharing your expertise and demonstrating the power of partnership working in shaping the future of our coastal environments. 🌍🀝🌊
