IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A NICE, EASY & MEMORABLE MAY DAY THIS YEAR, LOOK NO FURTHER... we're very pleased to be welcoming ultimate folk troubadour, punk pioneer and fly-fisherman extraordinaire to The Bullingdon, Oxford...

Always pushing boundaries and defying genres, Chuck’s music constantly strives for and, more importantly, achieves the rare distinction of being both groundbreaking yet feeling quite distinctly Chuck.

His new album 'Love And Lore' was recorded in early 2023
and the result is an album that showcases Chuck’s further transcending the “folk” label to create a collection of songs that see him stretching out as a songwriter to fearlessly explore new sonic territory.
It's set for release on October 25, 2024 (this Friday!) via Rise Records - available in all good record shops + online streamers.

A formidable presence on stage for the last three decades, Chuck Ragan played his first solo show over 30 years ago and
has been writing heartfelt campfire anthems ever since he picked up an acoustic guitar at the age of 12. He has now toured the globe extensively for the past two decades and has become a household name in both the folk and punk communities.

Tickets are now on sale for .band's Autumn tour - coming to Oxford on Weds 24th Sept...

Emerging as the most exciting homegrown act to come out of the midlands in over a decade, overpass unite singer and guitarist Max Newbold, bassist Indie Armstrong, guitarist Elliot Rawlings, and drummer Jake Bishop. The band formed through a series of serendipitous connections and a shared appreciation of arena-sized indie rock, leading them to sell out a string of ever increasing capacity shows in the UK’s second city.
With a growing fanbase despite little music out, overpass continued to make waves in the Birmingham music scene, bolstering word of mouth support. 2021 saw a trio of singles featuring high-octane performances and emotionally relatable, down to earth lyrics, helping turn their initial following into a bona fide fanbase. “We didn’t expect to sell out shows so quickly” says Elliot of early gigs at Dead Wax followed by two nights at the Sunflower Lounge in January 2022, “but Birmingham’s been amazing to us. The support from the local scene and our fans here’s just incredible. It’s a place that really nurtures creativity.”

Already selling more tickets than a lot of their major label contemporaries, overpass’ dedicated following feels like a refreshing counterpoint to
culture’s current obsession with online metrics. “We have big dreams and goals,” Max promises. “It's great to have loads of views on a video or something. But, like, what does it actually mean? When you see loads of people in front of you singing your songs back - that’s real.
It’s tangible. It’s authentic. And that’s what overpass is all about.”

MAY: are bringing Preoccupations to Oxford for the first time! - "We've admired this band for years, dating back to when they were initially called Viet Cong! The band are out touring their fifth album, coming very soon, and guaranteed to be a stunner."

+ "the fantastic post-electro duo are opening up for outrageous Canadian post-punks on Mon 19th May at the Bullingdon! Preoccupations are one of our favourite acts of the last ten years and their beautifully rough-edged post-punk is equally life-affirming and well-versed in existential dread - a great combo with Oxford’s MNSFPRDCTN! They have a new record, ‘Ill at Ease’ out on 9th May and we can’t wait to get stuck into it - the latest singles ‘Bastard’ and ‘Focus’ are immense - get involved Oxford, it’s not often a behemoth of the genre graces us on Cowley Rd!''

OCTOBER: Welsh indie-roots six piece are coming to Oxford next year...

They have been tearing up stages around the globe since 2010. Brandishing their distinct folk-roots sound armed with an electrifying mix of rampant fiddle, slick guitars, hooky mandolins and banjos melodies underpinned by tight pulsating drums and bass, they really are a force to be reckoned with.

Their latest album “Under a Bloodshot Moon” stormed the Official UK Folk Albums Chart straight in at Number 2 with no label backing, highlighting the support of their dedicated fanbase. Have a listen and grab a ticket before they're gone!

TONIGHT: team returns to the BullingdonThis to celebrate their third birthday...

--
For the occasion we’ve decided to bring it back to the original group of DJs we started with when we were still in sweaty pub function rooms. 30 minutes per set as always and recorded to watch back on our YouTube.

After a short 30 minute melodic opener, we will be playing an hour of deep meditative bass music. Dub techno, Deep Dubstep, Leftfield bass. Anything that gets you nodding your head and zoning out.

After that it’s straight into a series of five 30 minute sets from all our original members. Expect our signature fusion of Latin and African percussion with deep Soundsystem genres.

Headlining our night we have finally returning from his travels to play with us! We’ve missed him and his mixture of percussion from the global south.

Returning as usual we have , and

And for the first time since our first night at XLR our own will be playing our jungle/footwork slot! Looking forward to this one.

COMING UP IN MAY: welcome to town to celebrate their new album ‘Jump Into Life’, out on 28th March after a five year hiatus! We're delighted that .mp3 and are playing too - what a riotous bill!

When Sacred Paws broke through with their debut record they did so with firm intent and rousing success. The duo of Ray Aggs (Trash Kit, Shopping) and Eilidh Rodgers (Golden Grrrls) took their roots in the punk world and wound it together with myriad influences, from Afrobeat, through pop and post-punk, to create a glorious and unique hybrid. ‘Strike A Match’, the band’s urgent and infectious first offering, was released on Mogwai’s Rock Action label in 2017 and won the prestigious Scottish Album of the Year Award that same year. That success was quickly capitalised on with another full-length effort, the band’s second LP ‘Run Around The Sun’, which was released in 2019. More than five years have now passed since that release, and while Sacred Paws’ absence wasn’t necessarily deliberate it was certainly intentional - Ray and Eilidh deciding that rather than force the work, they would take as long as they felt they needed to produce the album they knew they were capable of!

COMING UP ON THE 30TH [MAY DAY!]
So much to look forward to in 2025 but the biggest date in the Oxford city calendar is undoubtedly May Day. returns for their annual May Day party and we can’t wait for this one for several reasons…

This year’s headliner is one of the most celebrated electronic artists to hail from Oxford in recent years - a jazz pianist who has released some overwhelmingly beautiful productions over the past decade and an accomplished DJ who has spent countless hours playing globally from the gnarliest squat raves to the most rarified deep house clubs - the list of genres he touches on is extensive: Techno, Ambient, Modern Classical, Jazz, Electronica, Broken Beat, Samba, Dubstep, Jungle, Footwork, DnB,
Triphop, Gabber and Electro….being such an enthusiastic record collector, his sets really can go in any direction.

With a thrilling new EP ‘Meaning’s Edge’ released in November and a new album dropping in the days running up to May Day (!) it’s the perfect time to invite back to the Simple stage!

Our second act, South London born and bred has made waves both on radio and at the rave showcasing her favourite selections of original, new, and future jungle records, plus the sounds of bass-lead old school rave, future hardcore, and breaks that she finds in between. She is also part of the iconic Swamp 81 label and hosts her own show on the legendary Kool FM.

TOMORROW: presents ...

Quade's debut album is astonishing and now here's the second! For their second album ‘The Foel Tower’, Quade holed up in an old stone barn in the cradle of a Welsh mountain valley.

The valley was a stark and windswept backdrop with little daylight, as the band would huddle around crackling fires each evening. “There was very much a feeling of being on the complete fringes of society,” the band says. “The last vestiges of settlement before the unrelenting barren moors that loomed over us.”

It was an environment that would shape the band – a Bristol four piece made up of Barney Matthews, Leo Fini, Matt Griffiths and Tom Connolly – and the record they have made. It’s an album that is as dreamy as it is melancholic, and as quiet and tender as it is forceful and potent – gliding across genres like winds blowing over those wide-spanning Welsh hills – to arrive at something the band half-jokingly, yet somewhat accurately, describe as “doomer sad boy, ambient-dub, folk, experimental post-rock.”

Quade is a band but it’s also a very close-knit group that have been friends since childhood who use this musical vehicle for interpersonal explorations and connections. “We’ve individually experienced a lot of difficulty over the last several years and Quade has represented a space to shelter from these,” the band says. “This means we often communicate extensively with each other about the issues affecting us individually and collectively. These conversations and concerns are central to The Foel Tower.”
