I’ve been doing recordings for Talking Newspapers for almost 6 years now, and I also get asked to record pieces for Guide Dogs for the Blind and for RNIB’s national library. The content ranges from local news to travel, from history to short stories .

I learn something every time I record; not only from the content, but also the technical stuff: how to avoid ‘plosives’ (those ‘popping’ sounds with a ‘p’ or ‘d’) the sibilants (s, z, sh and szh) .. I’ve learned about fricatives and alveolar.. And how to avoid the horrible smacking noise we don’t even realise we make when we open our mouths to speak.

All so helpful in my work as a celebrant, where of course voice control, modulation and projection is vital .

Who knew speaking was so difficult?!

Worn on this day in 1971 by Judi Dench at her to fellow actor Michael Williams at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hampstead, London.

Her long, fur-trimmed coat (worn over a silk dress and blue boots) kept her warm on the short walk from her home to the church.

When I am unavailable for ceremonies, I will always offer couples and families the names of good celebrants who are available to help. It is a bumper year for weddings again this year and I have already passed on 9 weddings to colleagues.

I have just had this lovely email from a grateful bride to be ...

" Good Morning Judy,
I honestly cannot thank you enough for all your help, I really do appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to help me.
Im truly sorry you aren't available as just the kindness you have shown here means you would have been perfect for us.
Thank you again! "

When you’re setting up in business as a celebrant, ALWAYS check that the name you’ve come up with isn’t already in use in UK by another celebrant; especially one who is local to you.
Integrity is everything. And of course as Celebrants, we are known for our imagination and originality of thought. 💜💖

This picture was taken at a awards evening.

How did I not notice the chair I was sitting on looks like a champagne glass? Or does it?

Anyway, little did I know that a few years later, I’d be a judge for TWIA.
It’s a huge responsibility but incredibly rewarding. And I think all the celebrants who were brave enough to enter the Wedding Awards are winners. They’re brilliant ambassadors for our profession. Thank you, TWIA, and thank you Celebrants !

Four years ago today, 12 celebrants came to Leamington Spa for some CPD learning I’d arranged with Daniel Browne of Warwickshire Pride , who gave a very informative session on many aspects of LGBT+ awareness and how to reach out to the LGBT community.
It was very thought provoking; and we all learned something new . It was so good to meet other celebrants, many of whom had travelled some way to be there.

This would be an interesting ritual to write into a ceremony!

The bride has a haircut after the “I Do’s” . I think I’d have written it into the ceremony - perhaps get her partner to wield the scissors for the first cut?

Alyssa Welch, a hairstylist from Columbus, Georgia, decided to chop off most of her locks right after tying the knot. She cut off six inches, surprising friends and family.

I was watching an episode of Michael Portillo’s ‘Railway Journeys’ on TV, and noticed that the is featured on the cover of his Bradshaw Guide! I’ve worked here as a celebrant on many occasions; for both weddings and funeral services. I was surprised to see at that time of the guide that it was a hotel owned by the railway.
