No. 1 Dressing Room

No. 1 Dressing Room Vintage and vintage style clothes hire for themed parties, re-enactments and costume design for stage and screen,

I have been working in theatre and film for the past twenty years and over this time have amassed various weird and wonderful costumes, which were in danger of taking over the house! My costume collection is now available to hire, with its new, purpose built home, come and see what I have, if I have not got it - I can source it for you. You may be going to a themed party or re-enactment and want t

o look the part, with a more authentic costume, not your average fancy dress. Alternatively you may be a theatre company looking for a designer who understands the demands and constraints of costuming a show, but who can show flair and originality to a production, in which case I can offer a full design service for you. Please visit my website to see some of the productions I have designed or worked on.

Squirrel opens at London's Unicorn Theatre on Saturday 27th May. This production for ages 6 months - 4 years is directed by Complicité's Senior Producer Tim Bell.

Squirrel loves a good acorn.
But not all acorns are good. Some are downright second rate.
And Squirrel is fussy like that.

This is a story of new growth and new beginnings with a sprinkling of jazz, Bauhaus, and an understanding of its under-five audiences that is as sophisticated as its cultural references.

Another figure from history, this time a more palatable one. No. 1 Dressing Room had to recreate Jackie Kennedy's iconic pink suit for the play First Lady Suite. After JFK was shot, the suit was splatted with blood but Jackie wore it for the next 24 hours, saying she "wanted them to see what they have done to Jack". It was one of his favourites and he wanted her to wear it that fateful day of November 22nd, 1963. It has never been cleaned and was donated to the National Archives by her daughter Caroline in 2003, however the public will not be able to see it until 2103.

Sometimes No. 1 Dressing Room has to dress distasteful figures from the past. However, the picture on the left is actor Julian Forsyth, playing actor Martin Miller, (right) recreating his famous Hi**er speech parody. This was first performed at the Lanterndl theatre in London during the early part of WW2 and later broadcast by the BBC. His uncannily accurate sounding speech had many people fooled at the time and just before Christmas, was recreated for Capriol Films' documentary "Through Lotte's Lens". Holt as you have never seen it before! Parts of the town were recently turned into 1940's Hutchinson's internment camp on the Isle of Man. Filming was taking place for the documentary Through Lotte's Lens by Capriol Films, directed by Tony Britten and due to be released in cinemas next year. An exciting and interesting project highlighting the influence that immigrants, fleeing from N**i Germany had on the arts, sciences and business of the UK, many of whom were photographed by celebrated photographer Lotte Meitner-Graf, who herself was a refugee from Vienna. Costume design by Suzanne Bell and sourced from No. 1 Dressing Room and the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich.

A sewing frenzy has been happening here at No. 1 Dressing Room! Here is a sneak preview of the costumes I have been busy making. Several of the costumes had a former life as something else - such as pair of curtains (very Sound of Music) and a duvet cover.
