On Monday, we welcomed a small sneak preview of the Art of Spirit Exhibition โ and one of the loveliest moments was watching the children slowly wander around the gallery, taking in each piece before choosing the artwork that spoke to them most โจ
It was a beautiful reminder that children experience art so differently. They notice shapes, colours, feelings, and stories in ways adults often overlook.
One painting that especially stood out to Ben (9) was โEmerald Lightโ by Jules Sherman-Case ๐
Ben explained that he could see an alligator shape on the right-hand side of the painting, alongside a human figure in the middle. He also noticed the circle shape that looked like the personโs head and connected with the glowing yellow tones throughout the piece โ fittingly, yellow is his favourite colour.
What was so lovely was hearing how naturally he interpreted the artwork through shapes and imagination, creating his own story within the painting. The flowing greens and golds became more than colours on a canvas; to Ben, they became living forms and hidden figures waiting to be discovered.
Beth (8) was drawn to โSacred Creationโ by Karen French ๐จ
She shared that she loved the artwork because in her own art lessons at school they have been learning about shapes, painting over shapes, and creating patterns using tools like toothpicks. She recognised those techniques within the piece and enjoyed spotting the layered geometric designs and textured details throughout the painting.
Beth also said one section looked like a seagull, showing once again how every person sees something unique within abstract art.
Listening to the children talk about the artwork was genuinely magical ๐ซ
No overthinking. No rules. Just imagination, curiosity, colour, and connection.
The Art of Spirit Exhibition officially opens tomorrow, and these beautiful pieces โ along with many more โ will be available to view throughout the exhibition.
