It is with a heavy heart that we bring you some very bad news today.
The short version is that we got shadowbanned on Tiktok, our primary platform for advertising and it’s ruined the summer event. Most likely this was due to our content being deliberately and falsely reported as part of the raids on our community’s discord.
Read on for the unabridged, full honesty version of what’s happened - there’s a TL;DR at the end for those who want the quick version.
A few weeks ago we noticed that our views on tiktok had dropped substantially over the course of a few days - this coincided with the tail end of the raids on the VV discord. We’d had some posts flagged and reported for breaking community guidelines. We were scratching our heads as to why: it was all family friendly and definitely wasn't breaking any rules! Despite this, ticket sales remained strong and Tiktok is pretty notorious for having a wild algorithm so we put corrective measures and a plan in place but we weren’t super worried - tickets were still selling, right?!
Turns out those ticket sales coming in were probably from folks who’d already seen our content in the preceding weeks/months and, about 10 days ago ticket sales dropped to nil overnight. Literally 12 tickets one day, 0 the next and 0 since.
Thanks to the presumably false reports, we can’t work out what content the algorithm is mad and our posts are being taken before they’re seen. Every time we appeal content and it gets reinstated it reinforces the shadow ban. Only thing for us to do would be to start anew and build up again but, with us being so close to the event and with so much growth lost, we’re not certain that we have enough time left to play the social media game. Since they dropped to nil we’ve lost between 50-100 sales. We’d only need two weeks more of that to have landed the event in its entirety.
The other potentially viable option is paid advertising, however that’s somewhat of a gamble and would affect our ability to refund you your money if it didn’t work - every penny we spend trying to fix it is a penny we can’t pay back.
So yes, we’re at that stage: cancellation & refunds.
Despite 200 kind folks buying tickets, we cannot proceed with the event that was advertised. We’d have to cut the offering by around half and we’re absolutely not comfortable doing that bait & switch - we’ve attended events within this scene where that has happened and I think a lot of us still have that bitter taste in our mouths.
TL;DR: we were deliberately targeted on our main platforms and it has destroyed ticket sales. We’re cancelling the event rather than throwing an event that does not live up to what was advertised.
We’ll give some news on refunds and deadlines asap but we’re working on that immediately so shouldn’t be long.
Thank you for your understanding
The VV Team.
