Sunday 24th August marks the 85th Anniversary of one of the heaviest raids on North Weald during the Battle of Britain.

Over two hundred bombs were dropped on the airfield and the village. During the raid nine young members of the 7th (Home Defence) Battalion, the Essex Regiment were killed when a shelter took a direct hit. The oldest of the dead was 19, the youngest 17. They had only arrived at North Weald the day before.

Aero Legends are operating their Spitfires on the 24th August and are holding a short commemoration around one of their aircraft.

The commemoration will take place between 1615 to 1630 (the approximate time of the air raid) in their operations area near the Squadron and Rosey Lea café at the far side of the airfield. The names of the dead will be read followed by the Last Post, two minutes silence and Reveille.

If anybody would like to come along you will be more than welcome.
