- We’re incredibly proud to have now received over 100 reviews from the families we have had the privilege of supporting.

In most industries, asking for a review is relatively straightforward. In ours, it can feel much more difficult. Families are often going through one of the hardest times of their lives, so the fact that so many people have taken the time to share their experiences means a great deal to us.

Every review represents a family who placed their trust in our team during an important and emotional time. We never take that trust for granted.

As a family business that has been serving our community since 1790, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has left a review, recommended us to others, or simply supported us along the way.

Your kind words mean more than you know, and they help reassure other families who may be facing a bereavement and wondering where to turn for help.

Thank you for your continued support.

- For over 236 years, the Turnbull family, my family, has been supporting families across Tyneside through some of life’s most difficult moments, providing care, guidance and reassurance when it is needed most.

As we continue that tradition with the opening of our new Benton branch, we were honoured to recently feature in Chronicle Live, sharing the story of seven generations of our family who have devoted their lives to funeral directing and serving local communities.

From our beginnings in 1790 to today, our commitment remains the same: providing compassionate, personal care and helping families create meaningful farewells for their loved ones.

Please take a few minutes to read the article and learn more about our history, our values and why we felt Benton was the right place for the next chapter in our story.

The name above the door still matters.

Because it should still mean something.

Recently, a family came to see us after an experience elsewhere. The funeral director they had first approached appeared to be a long-established, family-named business.

But it wasn’t family-owned anymore.

The name was familiar. The building hadn’t changed. But behind the scenes, it was a very different setup.

What unsettled them wasn’t just ownership. It was how the service felt. Rushed. Inflexible. As though decisions weren’t being made locally.

We’re hearing this more and more.

Over time, many well-known funeral directors have been acquired by larger corporate groups. The name often stays, but the connection to the family behind it doesn’t always.

Decisions may be made away from the local branch, with pricing and processes often set centrally rather than locally. In some cases, loved ones may also be taken into care away from the area.

At Turnbull’s, the name above our door is still our name. Turnbull’s remains family-owned, with generations of our family still involved in the business, and that connection still matters to us every day.

Our team are all local, part of the community, and share the same care and values we do as a family. That ethos runs through everything we do.

If you’re ever unsure, it’s always worth asking:

• Who owns the business?
• Where will my loved one be cared for?
• Are decisions made locally?

Because at a time like this, it’s not just the name that matters, it’s who stands behind it 🌿

If you need us, we’re always only a phone call away.

- Earlier this week, we had the honour of taking care of Sue Hodgkins and her family.

Sue was clearly someone with a real zest for life and an immense love for her family and those around her. Listening to the stories shared, and seeing the support surrounding her, it was obvious just how deeply loved and respected she was. She will be greatly missed by so many.

What makes Sue’s story even more remarkable is the incredible gift she chose to leave behind through organ donation. In the midst of such heartbreak, Sue’s kidneys have already helped change and save the lives of two people waiting for transplants. That is an extraordinary legacy and a final act of kindness that will never be forgotten.

At such an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time, Sue’s family have also shown such bravery and selflessness in supporting her wishes. Knowing that Sue has already helped change two lives has brought some comfort in the darkest of moments.

As funeral directors, we often see the impact one life can have on so many others, but stories like Sue’s are a powerful reminder of the hope and comfort that organ donation can bring to families facing unimaginable loss.

If you have ever considered becoming an organ donor, we would gently encourage you to have the conversation with your loved ones and look into registering. One decision can truly change lives.

This week reminded us why funerals matter so much. It was a real honour to look after Sue and her family.

To Sue 🥂

- Letters to loved ones' post box unveiled at Whitley Bay Cemetery with Mayor Karen Clark

We are proud to support the installation of a dedicated Letters to Loved Ones letterbox at Whitley Bay Crematorium, located within the beautiful Book of Remembrance Room.

Following the success of the initiative at Preston Cemetery and Tynemouth Crematorium, we’re honoured to continue working alongside North Tyneside Council Bereavement Services to bring this meaningful space to more families across our communities.

The initiative offers people the opportunity to leave letters or messages to loved ones using seeded biodegradable paper, available within the Book of Remembrance Room or directly from Turnbull’s. Families can take the paper away if they wish, allowing time to reflect and write in their own time before returning the letters to the post box.

Once collected, the seeded letters are planted within the remembrance gardens, where they grow over time into a living floral tribute.

Ben Broadhead, seventh-generation director of Turnbull’s, said:

“Grief can often be difficult to put into words, and we hope this initiative offers people a personal and meaningful way to feel connected to those they miss. We’ve seen first-hand how much comfort it has brought to many families already, and we’re very proud to now bring it to Whitley Bay as well.”

Whether it’s a message of love, remembrance or reflection, we hope the initiative continues to provide comfort, support and a peaceful place to remember loved ones.

❤️

Over the past few days, many local residents may have received a letter from us introducing ourselves following the opening of our new branch at 331 Benton Road.

As a seventh-generation family business that has supported families across Newcastle and North Tyneside since 1790, opening in Benton is an important step for us and one we’re incredibly proud of. It also allows us to support families more closely within the local area and strengthen our presence closer to Newcastle.

Although funerals are at the heart of what we do, being part of local life is just as important. We’re proud to support grassroots teams and community initiatives, including Heaton Stannington U8s Blacks and Benfield Girls U17s, and we’re looking forward to strengthening ties within the community and continuing to support local people, groups and initiatives in the years ahead.

For those who may not yet know us, you’ll find us in the former Lloyds Bank building, just to the right of the Tesco petrol station.

Our Benton Road office has been designed as a calm and welcoming space for families and we’re always only a phone call away if you ever need us.

Thank you to everybody who has already welcomed us into the community ❤️
