Love of Life (biophilia) at Fringe by the Sea 2026 ✨
A celebration of our connection to nature, place and one another.

🧡 We revealed 'Sula bassana' - a symphonic meditation by composer Erland Cooper. Inspired by North Berwick, the Firth of Forth and the landscapes that surround us. Recorded by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the piece was accompanied by a stunning film made by Lewis Gourlay cagoule.tv

The world premiere of 'Sula bassana' takes place on November 26th as part of Erland Cooper's Dawn Chorus & Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending, at Glasgow City Halls for the BBC SSO 2026-27 Season.

🪹 Did you pause at The Nest? This was artist Naomi McIntosh’s immersive sonic sculpture which captured 'Sula bassana', suspending it in a tranquil sycamore grove within the Festival Hub.

🩵 The Flock came together - a joyful parade of handmade gannets, crafted with Vision Mechanics, gathering at the Harbour on the opening day of FBTS 2026 with Haver Quartet offering a hint of the soundtrack.

🌱 Thousands of you explored nature's music through a special Plants Can Dance installation and workshops with Brian d'Souza and Lamine Toure.

Cut the cups film action🎬 🧡💪

This past summer we collaborated on a very exciting film project with our friends DDVisuals to document our battle against single use cups.

We think reusable cups are the future and luckily our friends Fringe By The Sea and Scottish Coastal Clean Up are equally passionate about bringing them to Fringe by the Sea.

This short film shares the challenges and triumphs we faced bringing deposit cups to the people - and why we think it matters.

We are feeling GOOD after taking stock of this year's Fringe by the Sea 🩵🙂

😎2026 was the biggest FBTS yet - we welcomed over 111,500 visitors, with ticket sales up 16%.
🚀 An economic boost of £12.7m was generated for East Lothian, a jump of 13% on last year.
❤️Over £20k was raised for charities, including more than £13k for Scottish Coastal Clean Up from the reusable cups deposit scheme, directly supporting clearing marine plastic.
🪩96% of you rated your time with us Very Good or Excellent.

As an independent festival rooted in community, we've got to this point with your support and encouragement - which we don't take for granted - as well as the efforts and commitment of our hardworking crew, big volunteer energy and the backing of brilliant partners. We are grateful ☺️

With your feedback, we are clear on the areas that need focus and improvement and we're already on it, planning for 2027.
