Cwtsh A creative space in Newport bringing people together through arts, culture, learning, and community connection - plus a venue for hire. Come and join us!

Exhibitions, workshops, open mic and wellbeing. Embrace the Cwtsh – a welcoming corner of creativity in Newport. Cwtsh is an ultra local arts centre that opened in February 2015 in the former "Stow Hill Library building at the Handpost, Newport. If ‘small is beautiful’, so was Stow Hill library, a much-loved institution that served the local community from 1940 until it closure in 2013. Small libr

aries help to develop reading skills and a love of literature. A group of us met "on the picket line" as campaigners to persuade Newport City Council to keep the library open. Now we have worked together to re-open the building as a micro arts centre at the Handpost.

What a fantastic turnout at Cwtsh on Sunday, with no less than 14 poets volunteering to read their poems on what was intended to be the last day of the WRITE exhibition. With so much enthusiasm for it, we've decided to hold it over for another weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 1st and 2nd August, 1-4pm. NB the gallery won't be open on Friday as usual, but hope to see anyone who hasn't had the chance/time to view 'Write In The Eye' before it's well and truly gone. All welcome!!

Richard Devereux came to the Murenger from Bristol to read to us from his poetry collection 'Coal and Fire' on Wednesday. An enthralling evening Richard, it was a fascinating to hear you read and tell stories of your two grandfathers - one 'dadcu' from the Rhondda, the other from the Black Country.

A great big thank you to all who came to Cwtsh for the launch of 'Write In The Eye' last night. A special moment when an elderly lady came into Cwtsh not knowing where she was and needed assistance from the police to get her home! Sorry I didn't capture that for posterity, but here are a few shots from the joyful occasion.

Coming up very soon, July 3rd, the launch of the new exhibition at the Cwtsh.' Write In The Eye' brings together some 100 portraits in colour and black and white of Wales-based writers since 2002. Selected from thousands of images and taken at all manner of literary events in Wales over the past 25 years - festivals, book launches, award ceremonies, readings at open mics, literary walks, authors at home – the series illustrates just how rich and varied the Welsh literary scene is today, was and will continue to be.

Come and join us to view the latest creations from the Vision Arts group of accomplished contemporary artists from Newport and South East Wales. Their modern-day renditions of some of the most famous paintings the art world has ever known are intended as a tribute to the famous artists who created them. Bound to delight art lovers of all ages, 'Fakes' could also raise the awareness of those of us who are less familiar with the works of past masters. Drinks and nibbles, plus the assembly of cultured folk typical of Cwtsh gatherings are guaranteed to make the occasion a most pleasurable one. All welcome!
