Brucknerhaus Linz 12-05-2026 review
Virtuosity without a net: Nikolai Medvedev inspires with piano art in a class of its own.
When a pianist’s hands seem to vanish into thin air and the keys become nothing more than a shimmering blur of motion, one is witnessing not an ordinary concert evening, but a truly extraordinary musical experience. This is exactly what pianist Nikolai Medvedev gave his audience.
With breathtaking precision, remarkable ease, and an almost unbelievable technique, Medvedev guided listeners through works by Joseph Haydn, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, George Gershwin, and Nikolai Kapustin, a composer who is still performed far too rarely in this country. Particularly astonishing was the fact that the pianist performs his programmes entirely from memory. Asked why, he replied that he simply could not read the notes quickly enough.
Yet Medvedev left a lasting impression not only through his musicianship. After the concert, he took time to speak personally with audience members and offered fascinating insights into his life and career. He spoke about why he ultimately chose not to pursue a career as a lawyer, discussed his musical role models, and revealed which composers continue to inspire him most to this day.
An evening filled with virtuosity, personality, and musical passion — this is exactly what “Bruckners Beste” sounds like.“
