What I’ve learned flower farming (so far!)👇

After 15+ years of running a flower farm, I can tell you — every single one of these lessons was learned the hard way.

1️⃣ No strategy – I used to plant what I loved, not what made sense for the business. Now every crop has a purpose.
2️⃣ Avoiding the numbers – Profit margins matter just as much as petals. Know your costs.
3️⃣ Not knowing your customer – I once grew for “everyone” and sold to no one. The magic happens when you really know who you’re growing for.
4️⃣ Saying yes to everything – From markets to weddings to workshops… I burned out trying to be everywhere. Focus is power.
5️⃣ No marketing plan – Beautiful flowers don’t sell themselves. A consistent plan beats last-minute panic every time.
6️⃣ Fear stops visibility – I hid behind the flowers instead of showing my face. People buy from people — not just pretty blooms.
7️⃣ No production planning – Succession sowing, rotation, staffing… all learned from chaos in the early years!
8️⃣ Competition mindset – The biggest shift? Realising collaboration always beats comparison.
9️⃣ Business runs you – If you don’t set boundaries, your farm will eat your weekends (and your sanity).
🔟 Doing it alone – Asking for help isn’t weakness. It’s how your business — and you — actually grow.

🎧 That’s exactly what this week’s podcast episode is all about — the biggest mistakes I’ve made and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

If you’d like to listen and hear more of my tips, comment the word ‘PODCAST’ below and I’ll send you the link.

🌱 And very soon, I’ve got something special coming for all you flower farmers to keep learning from all of my mistakes and lessons… stay tuned!

The airers are full of farm grown flowers ready for our famous wreath kits 🌿👇

With materials grown and gathered from our Buckinghamshire farm, our wreath kits are all sustainable and made without harming the environment (sorry folks, oasis doesn’t biodegrade.) We’ll teach you to make a beautiful natural wreath, with hand picked and specially chosen ingredients sent right to your door.

Every kit will be slightly different and unique, with fresh & dried ingredients picked from the farm and preserved in limited quantities. This Summer we hand picked a whole range of flowers and foliage and hung them to dry on our Victorian airers, depending what was in season and now they’ll be specifically chosen for you to make your festive doorway extra special.

We love to encourage everyone to get together as a group of friends, colleagues, a community group or family so this year we’ve added discounts the more kits you buy too.

As always our demonstration video is from ITV This Morning florist , and you can stop the video to serve more drinks or when you need to pause and catch up.

Are you dreaming of starting your own flower farm – or already knee-deep in blooms and wondering how to make the business side actually work? 🌸

I’ve been there – figuring out pricing, trying to keep up with social media, and wondering how to stand out in a busy market.

That’s exactly why, every year, I run The Blooming Business Bootcamp – a free online week designed to help flower farmers (and soon-to-be flower farmers!) get back to basics, find focus, and build a business that’s both profitable and sustainable. 🌿

This year’s bootcamp runs 17th–20th November, and it’s packed with practical advice, honest conversations, and plenty of flower-farming community spirit.

We’ll cover:
💐 Pricing – and how to charge confidently
🌻 Marketing – what really works today
🌷 Competition – how to stand out
🌿 The top mistakes flower farmers make – and how to avoid them

It’s one of my favourite weeks of the year – four days of learning, sharing, and connecting with people who get it. So, if that sounds like your kind of week, pop the word ‘BOOTCAMP’ below and we’ll send you the link to register so you can join our webinars & learning for free! 🥰👇

🌸 Cutting Patch Jobs for November (UK-based)

Lift or protect dahlias
If your soil is free-draining and winters mild → cut down, cover crowns with a thick mulch.
If frost-prone or heavy soil → lift, dry, label, and store tubers in a frost-free place.

Plant tulip bulbs
November is perfect for this — soil is cool enough to reduce tulip fire risk.
Plant deeply (3x bulb height) in well-drained soil.
Sow sweet peas
Sow under cover for strong early plants.
Keep cool and bright to prevent legginess.

Plant out hardy annuals
Autumn-sown ones like cornflowers, ammi, larkspur, nigella, calendula can be planted out if your soil isn’t waterlogged.
Otherwise, keep them in a cold frame until spring.
Bring in tender perennials
Lift or pot up salvias, pelargoniums, argyranthemums, verbenas etc.
Overwinter in a frost-free greenhouse or porch.
Divide and replant herbaceous perennials
Great time for phlox, rudbeckia, echinacea, asters, leucanthemum.
Rejuvenates clumps and creates more plants.
Make leaf mould
Collect fallen leaves (avoid evergreen types) and store damp in bin bags or a wire cage to rot down into beautiful mulch.
🌿 Additional November Cutting Patch Jobs
Mulch beds
Apply compost or well-rotted manure to improve structure and protect soil life over winter.
Tidy and clean tools, labels, and pots
Wash pots and seed trays; sharpen and oil secateurs — saves hassle later.
Check and repair infrastructure
Fix paths, edges, supports, netting, tunnels, irrigation before the next season.
Plan next year’s patch
Review what worked, sketch bed rotations, and order seeds and supplies.
Protect newly planted shrubs or roses
Stake if windy; mulch bases to insulate roots.
W**d while you still can
Remove perennial weeds before the soil freezes — it’ll save time in spring.
Cut back old growth selectively
Leave seed heads for wildlife and structure where possible; clear only diseased material.
Empty compost heaps
Use the finished compost to mulch beds, and start a new heap with fresh material.

We’re picking the very last of the flowers from the farm right now… ready to dry and tuck away for one of our favourite times of year — wreath kit season! 🌿✨

Our sell-out wreath kits are back for this year - filled with flowers and foliage grown and gathered right here on our Buckinghamshire farm. Every stem has been hand-picked through the seasons, carefully hung to dry on our old Victorian airers, and now chosen especially for you to create a beautiful, natural wreath from the comfort of your home.

Each box is completely unique — no two kits will ever be the same — featuring the best of what we’ve grown and preserved in limited quantities. 100% sustainable, fully compostable, and proudly oasis-free 🌱

Whether you’re making yours solo or getting together with friends, colleagues, or family, our kits are designed for cosy, creative evenings. And this year, we’ve added group discounts too — the more you order, the more you save!

As always, you’ll have a step-by-step video from ITV’s This Morning florist to guide you through the process (and yes, you can pause to top up your mulled wine 🍷).

Comment WREATH below to be first to pre-order — they sold out last year, so don’t hang about!

From our farm to your home, every wreath begins here — with flowers picked, dried, and gathered by hand. 🌸🎄

Every inch counts 😉👇

If you’re leaving your dahlias in the ground this winter then it’s all about mulching!!

Fun fact: Every inch of mulch means your tubers can endure one more degree of frost! A great way to gauge how thick a layer you should add! It could be compost, manure, clippings, cardboard or more!

But don’t stop there: If the weather throws a curveball with unexpected deep freezes, a little extra straw or cardboard, or even old carpet can provide added protection for a few days.

Remember, with the right care, your dahlias will reward you with even more vibrant blooms next season. Keep them cozy and they’ll thank you!

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this little dahlia ‘lift or leave’ series of reels, there’s still a few more to come! Have a look at some of the others if you’re wanting to lift, or if you’re not even sure which to do! If you’ve still got any questions then fire away 👇🤩

Add it to your grow list 🌿👇🏼

One definite perennial recommendation from me is verbena. And if you’re not growing it already, here’s why I think you should next year:

1️⃣ From Seed to Splendour: Verbena is a breeze to grow from seed. Its resilience and vigor make it a perfect choice for both beginners and seasoned flower farmers. It practically thrives on neglect!

2️⃣ Long-lasting & prolific: Once verbena starts to bloom, it keeps on giving. Those vibrant clusters of flowers just keep coming, providing an extended season.

3️⃣ Strength in Blooms: Verbena isn’t just pretty; it’s strong! Its sturdy stems and robust flowers mean it holds up beautifully in bouquets and arrangements. No wilting here!

4️⃣ Cut Flower Champion: When it comes to cut flowers, verbena is a true champion. It plays well with other blooms, adding that perfect touch of wild elegance to any bouquet.

So, if you’re a flower farmer or simply a lover of stunning cut flowers, don’t overlook verbena! It’s a reliable, easy-to-grow, and long-lasting addition to your garden and floral designs.🥰🌿
