Pride events are not staged exclusively for our LGBTQ communities. They are all inclusive, because celebrating people being able to live openly, safely, and authentically is something we should all want. Being an Ally and supporting or attending Pride, is no different to showing your support for other causes that affect OUR communities.
Pride is strongest when people from different backgrounds come together, demonstrating
respect, equality, and human connection, something that is still sadly behind the times.
Tomorrow’s Durham Pride starts with a gathering and march from Palace Green down to The Sands at 11am. I will be standing proud, side by side with my LGBTQ friends and the whole community, and hope to see lots of you also turning up. Come and enjoy a coming together, with good weather expected and a huge variety of entertainment, while showing we care, support and accept people who simply want to be who they are 🏳️🌈💕🏳️🌈 Durham Pride UK let your spirit shine bright this weekend!
A little bit of education (And happy to be corrected if I’m wrong on any of this, and yes I did utilise ChatGPT for some information ) but for anyone who doesn’t understand the significance of the Pride flag, the Different colors have traditionally carried symbolic meanings, including:
* Red — life
* Orange — healing
* Yellow — sunlight
* Green — nature
* Blue — harmony and peace
* Violet — spirit
Over time, additional Pride flags and updated versions have been created to represent the wide diversity within the LGBTQ+ community. For example, the Progress Pride flag includes colours representing transgender people and LGBTQ+ people of colour, emphasising inclusion and recognition of communities that have faced additional discrimination.
Beyond the design itself, the flag often symbolises:
* Pride instead of shame
* Visibility instead of silence
* Community and belonging
* Support for equal rights and acceptance
For many people, displaying the flag is a way of saying: “You are welcome, safe, and respected here,” whether in schools, workplaces, homes, or public spaces. Let’s not allow politics to overshadow such a well-meaning symbol.
