Shaw House

Shaw House Experience learning, enjoyment and inspiration at this beautiful Elizabethan Grade I listed building
(1)

Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. This fine Elizabethan building was home to successive Dolman families, the flamboyant Duke of Chandos and the Andrews and Farquhar families. Shaw House then began a new life as a school for generations of local children. However in 1985 Shaw House was evacuated due to concerns about the structure of the building. Following a £6million Restoration Project you can now enjoy Shaw House!

Did you know that today marks 80 years since the Farquhar family put Shaw House and Estate up for sale? This marked the end of the house’s time as a family home.

The auction, which took place at The Chequers Hotel in Newbury, saw 30 lots available, each an area of the Shaw House Estate, compiling over 1,200 acres.

Whilst we only have a small amount of that land now, which forms the lawns and gardens surrounding the House, we take delight in seeing so many people enjoy the grounds through the year at our events and open days. You can find out more about the history of Shaw House in our exhibition room which is free to visit every weekend until the end of September and everyday throughout the summer holiday!
