What have we done?! 😅 Investing in so many Hellebores to grow as a cut flower crop seemed like a good idea at the time… until we discovered that every single pot is so pot-bound that the plants are refusing to come out! A mountain of work, just when we’re reaching the end of an already exhausting season.
When this opportunity came our way, we hadn’t really considered growing Hellebores commercially as a cut flower. What we did know was that they grow particularly well on our soil, and we already have glorious, long stems in abundance in the garden.
They’re relatively easy to maintain and, perhaps most importantly, flower at a time of year when flowers are scarce — making them a really valuable addition to our cut flower range.
We bought this crop from another grower who had decided to change the range of cut flowers they were growing. We already have a market for the stems through British wholesaler , and by taking on the crop, Helen will be able to continue supplying her customers too.
Some of the plants will be grown in pots in the glasshouse, with the majority planted out in the polytunnels.
And, of course, we’re hoping we’ll have plenty to share with you and introduce into our early spring workshops. 🌿
Right now, it feels like a mountain to climb — especially with all those stubborn pots! But once they’re finally in the ground, re-potted and given everything they need, I’m sure they’ll reward us for years to come. 🤞
