Sadly missed
Sad to hear legendary soul mafia DJ Chris Hill has passed. As well as having a formidable musical knowledge Chris was a phenomenal entertainer who really knew how to control a crowd - creating a massive vibe with his mc-ing, singing, dancing, playing percussion over the tunes. Chris had such a following that he was the first UK DJ (who wasn’t a radio or TV celeb) who travelled the country to different venues and got paid a decent fee. I recall seeing him one Friday at Oscars in Clacton on Sea in the early 80s. Unfortunately it wasn’t busy that night but I do remember him playing Pleasure “Sassafras Girl”. Chris’s longest residency was at the Goldmine, Canvey Island. It’s amazing how that became such a soul funk jazz institution as it wasn’t really locals who attended, people travelled from all over the place purely to see Chris. I remember regularly reading in James Hamiltons Record Mirror column how Chris was pushing a certain new or old tune. One that springs to mind was a test pressing of a new Rodney Franklin LP he’d got on a recent US visit that contained an instrumental which already had a dance associated with it at the Goldmine. The dance was “The Freeze”, the song “The Groove” and without his initial influential push it may well have not gone any further than being an import album track. I think I would be right in saying Chris was the head honcho within the Soul Mafia and they really did back and push certain new records and in some cases were responsible for those songs becoming proper hits. Chris also worked at Ensign records signing Light of the World, Incognito, David Bendeth and Galaxy - maybe Eddy Grant too, the latter i’m not sure of. He was a good business man with great ears. In a varied career Chris co produced a few tunes in the 70s, best being the Mascara LP “See You In L.A” featuring Luther Vandross. He also had a couple of pop hits as an artist with novelty songs “Renta Santa” and “Bionic Santa”. When house music came along it was a train Chris wasn’t interested in boarding, he didn’t like the sound and stuck with what he loved. Fair play to him, we all have a point which we don’t want to go beyond. Safe onward journey Mr Hill X
