The Curry Pincher

The Curry Pincher Sri Lankan Street Food for pop-ups, markets and private catering. Private cookery lessons available

What can I say about me... well I started cooking when I was very young, in fact I think I first learnt to cook rice and dhal when I was about 6 in miniature clay pots someone bought me as a gift, on a fire in the garden. Both my parents were Dutch Sri Lankan and both were prolific cooks. Not a day went by without one or other of them cooking up something experimental or traditional (and of course

spending a lot of time telling the other one what they could do better!). I have long held a dream of starting a food business but it was not until late last year that I found myself in the position of being able to do so and it took quite some months of thought and encouragement to get here. The name "The Curry Pincher" is derived from the Sri Lankan word for curry leaves, "Karapincha". My food is personal to me, and I'm really looking forward to sharing that with you.

This is samba rice, one of the more traditionally used types in Sri Lanka. It has a short plump grain and forms the basis for Lamprais, a family recipe and the main course at our birthday party on 1st Nov. This Dutch Sri Lankan dish has been cooked by my family for generations and I'm so excited to share it with those lucky enough to get tickets to this fabulous feast!

Even though this article is based on American research, we also have a real spike in Sri Lankan restaurants and pop ups in the UK. I'm thrilled and delighted that Sri Lankan food is getting the recognition it deserves!

Sri Lanka has been recognized for its exceptional culinary delights, ranking 7th for the world’s best food in 2025, according to Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

With a magnificent score of 95.56%, Sri Lanka is ranked ahead of top global tourist destinations such as Türkiye, France, Morocco, Colombia, Maldives, South Africa and Greece.

As revealed in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2025, with votes cast by readers around the world, “Sri Lanka is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Dishes are packed with a thrilling blend of spice, colour, and lots of coconut, and look no further than Pettah Market in Colombo to indulge yourself.”

“Much of Sri Lankan cuisine is centred around home cooking traditions, and this loving touch of generational family recipes is what really makes the food here special,” according to the leading US-based travel magazine.

Ash plantain is a very versatile ingredient. It looks like a big green banana, when coked it tastes and has the texture of a very flavourful potato. It absorbs spices and flavours really well and makes a superb side dish for a simple lunch. 😋
