First of three parties today and I'm mid setup as I write this, which is actually what got me thinking about this post.

Something I see a lot: parents will invite all the guests to arrive about half an hour before the entertainment actually starts. The idea is to stretch the party out and make it feel bigger and more fun, and I completely understand why.

Thing is, it tends to do the opposite. You end up with a hall full of buzzing kids and nothing for them to do yet, so they're tearing round in circles or stood watching me heave the bouncy castle in and plug my speakers up. Riveting stuff for a five year old, that.

A party runs so much better when everyone turns up and it's already in full swing. The music's going, the bouncy castle's up and the show's about to start, so the little ones walk straight into the fun. No bored waiting around, and you're not stuck keeping a room full of kids happy for two solid hours before I've even begun.

So if you've got one coming up, my honest advice is to tell people to arrive bang on the start time. Smoother party, happier kids, and a whole lot less for you to worry about on the day.
