The garden doesn’t know how strange this summer has felt. It just kept blooming.

It’s been a long summer and a short one, both at once. The kind where days stretched out lazy and slow, and then you blink and it’s nearly over.

Jessie Ware’s “16 Summers” sums up the feeling of summers as a kind of currency, precious and finite and never quite enough of them.

It’s made me look at all of this a little differently. Not sad, exactly. Just aware. Grateful for the light while it’s here.

So here’s to late blooms, long evenings, and holding onto it all a little more tenderly this year. 🌿🌾

A little Garden Before and After (& a catch up)

I was on such a role with sharing content wasn’t I? 😂

Well the reality is, it’s the summer holidays, kiddies are at home and I’ve been busy with GARDENS!

It’s all so exciting, I love it so much, this front garden was a great one.

Between now and late September I won’t be planting up any more gardens, it’s just too hot! The heat and the fact that the plants are in their flowering/growing period, puts them under additional pressure planting now and means they require extra care! So it just makes sense to wait until autumn when the ground is still warm but the plants are heading into dormancy. Meaning they’ll put all their effort into putting on strong roots ready for next year.

Saying that, it means right now is all about planning.

Two planting design meetings this week, which entails measuring up the site, collecting soil samples, understanding the light through the garden and rather importantly understanding the needs of the garden from its owners.

Its all full on right now - if I’m not planning a garden, I’m learning the science of plants and I tell you what, at nearly 40, learning in a way I haven’t since uni is a shock to the system. But I’m so bloody eager!

A glimpse of familiarity is on the horizon too, with two incredible weddings coming up - I’m working hard with foureyesdesign to create aesthetically brilliant stationary & floral designs. So watch this space for wedding goodness soon 🌿

Gardening has taught me how wonderful slow progress can be 🌿

Planning with patience is not something that comes easy to me, but with gardening I just accept it.

I honestly recommend to anyone who hasn’t tried growing a plant or tending to their garden to give it a go.

If you’re:

A busy bee
Forever feel in demand
Have a busy job
Never have time
You’re not creative
Not green fingered
Don’t know where to start
…

The list of excuses to why you don’t garden can go on and on. But just ignore them and start NOW. It will change your life.

Also, if you have someone to take pictures like this, that make everything look tranquil and peaceful, that’s a bonus!
Looking at this picture fills me with happiness and also makes me chuckle because I know I’d just been screeching like a banshee 2 seconds earlier.
(Let’s all remind ourselves that nothing is perfect)

If you’d told me ten years ago that I’d be studying horticulture and spending my days with muddy boots on or baking in the sun while weeding a veg bed. I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

Ruffled Flowers began with a love of floristry, and that will always be part of who I am. But over time, I’ve realised what I really love is creating beauty through the seasons—not just in a vase, but in gardens too.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about caring for a space, watching plants thrive, and seeing how even small changes can have such an incredible impact.

So this page is evolving alongside me.

You’ll still see flowers, because I can’t imagine life without them. But you’ll also see gardens, seasonal planting, the occasional muddy boot, my RHS journey, and plenty of behind-the-scenes moments from life at Grange Farm.

I’m also excited to be offering local gardening services, bringing a florist’s eye for colour and seasonality into the gardens I care for.

Thanks for being here. Whether you’ve followed Ruffled Flowers for years or you’re just joining the journey, I’m so glad you’re here for this next chapter.

1am football has led to a few arguments tonight, we’ve settled on allowing alarms to be set and hoping they’re so tired they sleep through - but it’s doubtful.

Duckling Diaries:

First round of Runner Ducklings aka ruffled ducks are off heat and time to find new homes for some of them.

Genuinely not sure how I’ll walk down the garden path with tripping over them all!

So let me know how many you want and what you’re going to call them! They’re only going to homes who have built them a palace and that will call them incredible names 😂🤍

I’m certainly not feeling as fresh as this bouquet looks - anyone else struggling in the heat?

It’s been scorching at Howard Court today, but I’ve cleared another huge bed ready to mulch. No planting until October now though.

These hot old summers mean when you’ve got a border this big (and 10 other like it) it’s too risky to plant up with perennials at this time of year.

Autumn will allow for the plants to establish in good soil, with water and cooler weather, putting on good roots before new growth in spring.

So as tempting as it is to buy new plants right now, just be mindful that any perennials you put in will struggle - so make your life easier and wait until autumn.
