On Saturday, 24th October, join DAW Paranormal at Trinity Theatre in Cowes for an evening of curiosity, experiments and hands-on investigation.

An empty theatre has an atmosphere all of its own. We’ll spend the evening observing, trying different investigation techniques and considering possible explanations for anything unusual we experience.

🎭 Why are theatres so often associated with ghost stories?

There's something fascinating about an empty theatre.

A place normally filled with voices, movement, music and applause suddenly becomes quiet. The stage is dark, the seats are empty, and even the smallest sound can seem strangely out of place.

But why do theatres have such a long association with hauntings?

🧠 What does anomalistic psychology tell us?

Our surroundings can influence how we perceive and interpret unusual experiences. In low lighting, familiar shapes become less distinct, unexpected sounds attract our attention, and our expectations may influence what we believe we've experienced.

In 2003, psychologist Richard Wiseman and colleagues investigated reports of unusual experiences at locations associated with hauntings, including Hampton Court Palace and Edinburgh's South Bridge Vaults.

Their research found associations between certain environmental conditions and the locations where unusual experiences were reported, raising interesting questions about the relationship between our surroundings, perception and reported paranormal activity.

And closer to home, Trinity Theatre in Cowes has its own intriguing history, including references to a 'Trinity Ghost' in the theatre society's historical accounts.

👻 So what happens when the audience leaves, the lights go down, and the investigation begins?

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last night for our investigation at Dimbola Museum & Galleries!

What an amazing group of people to spend the evening with. Everyone approached the investigation with enthusiasm, curiosity and an open mind, getting involved in everything we explored together.

Throughout the evening, we experimented with a range of investigative techniques, including scrying, glass divination, the Estes Method, table tipping, EVP recording and dowsing rod divination.

🔎 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞, with some interesting experiences and observations shared by participants. The other experiments also prompted plenty of discussion and gave us lots to reflect on.

During glass divination and the Estes Method, several names were communicated, and one Estes session included a reference to a situation involving one of Dimbola's gallery rooms. These are details we'll be looking at more closely as we review the evening.

Of course, the investigation doesn't end when we leave the building! We still have our EVP recordings, body-camera footage and investigation notes to go through, and we're looking forward to seeing what, if anything, warrants further examination.

For us, these evenings are about more than simply looking for paranormal activity. They're an opportunity to explore unusual experiences, ask questions, experiment together and consider different explanations for what we observe.

This week I’ve been reading about memory conformity — and it’s made me think quite a lot about how we record experiences during investigations.
Memory is not a perfect recording of an event. What we remember can be influenced by what we hear afterwards, particularly when people who have experienced the same event begin discussing it together.
One of the papers I’ve been reading looked at co-witness discussion and how information introduced by another person can influence what somebody later remembers seeing themselves.
What I find particularly interesting is that this doesn’t mean anyone is being dishonest.
People can be completely genuine in what they remember, while still being influenced by information received after the original event.
From an investigation point of view, that raises an important question:
Should investigators record what they experienced independently before discussing it with anyone else?
I think they should.
If several people hear a sound, see something unusual or experience something at the same time, their first independent accounts may be far more useful than a shared version of events created after everyone has talked about it.
Psychology has always influenced the way I look at unusual experiences, particularly areas such as memory, perception, expectation and suggestion.
For me, understanding those processes doesn’t take anything away from an experience. It helps us investigate it more carefully.
It’s one of the reasons I find this area of investigation so fascinating.

Tony and I have always been fascinated by unusual experiences.
We both come from psychology and medical backgrounds, so I think naturally we tend to approach things by asking questions rather than jumping straight to conclusions.
If someone hears something, sees something, feels something unusual or reports a recurring experience, we’re interested in what actually happened and what might explain it.
Could there be an environmental reason?
Could perception, memory or expectation have played a part?
Was anything recorded?
Has the same thing been reported independently by somebody else?
Sometimes there is a straightforward explanation. Sometimes there isn’t.
For us, both are interesting.
We try to stay open-minded, but we also like to be evidence-based and honest about what the evidence can actually support.
So although paranormal investigation is often described as “looking for ghosts”, that isn’t really how we see it.
We’re interested in the experiences themselves — how they happen, how people perceive them, what can be measured, what can be explained, and what remains genuinely unexplained.
That curiosity is a big part of why we do what we do.

I realised recently that, apart from our event posts, we haven't shared much of the research side of DAW for quite a while.

Life has been busy, and somewhere amongst everything else I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to sit down, read, research and explore some of the subjects that genuinely fascinate me.

So I've made a little more space for that again.

Paranormal experiences raise so many interesting questions — about perception, memory, environment, psychology and, of course, those occasions where we're left without an obvious explanation.

I love that side of investigating.

Not necessarily trying to prove something one way or the other, but reading, questioning, comparing ideas and asking whether there might be another way of looking at what happened.

So alongside everything else we do, I'm hoping to start sharing some interesting research, articles and ideas here again from time to time.

And perhaps they'll give us a few things to discuss too.

𝐀𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦

We had another fascinating investigation at Lilliput Doll Museum last night, with activity experienced in both the Hall of Dolls and The Cottage.

Our evening began in the Hall of Dolls, where we appeared to receive some interaction with our coin trigger object. One of the cat balls was also activated during the session.

While in this area, one member of the group reported experiencing a distinct feeling of cold. We investigated this using the thermal imaging camera, which appeared to confirm a colder area around them. The camera also displayed an unexplained humanoid-shaped figure beside the participant, which seemed to pulse in and out of the image.

We later moved into The Cottage, where the table-tipping session produced considerable movement. The table initially tipped in response to questions before beginning to spin. Interestingly, the activity continued regardless of which participants had their hands on the table at the time.

Everyone involved in the EVP session approached it patiently and followed the method extremely well. However, after reviewing the session, we did not capture anything that we could confidently present as evidence.

The Estes Method proved more productive. Several responses appeared to correspond with information and experiences recorded during previous investigations, while others complemented details gathered elsewhere during the evening. These connections will be documented and compared as part of our continuing work at the museum.

As always, we approach each experience carefully and consider possible environmental or natural explanations before drawing any conclusions.

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and intriguing night.

A Strange Night at Dimbola…

We may have forgotten to take a group photograph, but Saturday night certainly gave us plenty to talk about.

The investigation began with a number of taps heard during our opening session. With windows open nearby, we could not rule out a natural cause, but they were still noted as part of the evening.

Later, during an otherwise very quiet Estes Method session, the silence was suddenly broken by what appeared to be a plea for help, followed by words suggesting that someone had died.

One of the most striking moments came during mirror scrying. A guest began to see the face of a balding man forming in the mirror. Before she had told anyone what she could see, another person in the room announced that her face appeared to be changing into that of a balding man.

Elsewhere in the building, footsteps were heard from above, despite nobody being in that area at the time.

A strange flashing light was also witnessed more than once. At first, it appeared to be coming through a window, but on closer inspection, the area was not a window at all — it was a plain wall. We were unable to establish where the light was coming from.

In Julia Margaret Cameron’s bedroom, the SLS camera produced several apparent figures, including in areas where the camera had not calibrated against obvious objects. At one point, someone asked whether a figure could wave if it was a woman. Its arm immediately appeared to lift and wave towards us.

As always, these experiences are not presented as proof of paranormal activity. Some may have ordinary explanations, while others remain more difficult to account for. Our role is to document what happened, consider possible causes and continue investigating.
