Debra Watson | Poet & Performer - performing as part of Seasonal Poetics at Melford House on Friday 26th June.

Debra Watson is an award-winning poet and immersive artist based in Hastings, UK, known for her atmospheric and “suprasensual” approach to the spoken word. As the founder collectives The Poetry Brothel Hastings and The Crimson Word, she specialises in 1-2-1 performance and literary cabaret that blurs the line between performer and participant.
A published author (Laments & Incantations) and academic contributor to Spoken Word in the UK (Routledge), Debra’s work—often delivered through her captivating alter-ego Bibi Synthe—explores intimacy, ecology, and the power of the archetype. From international film festival awards to intimate site-specific installations, hers is an evocative voice in contemporary performance poetry.

What an incredible day on Saturday! Could not have asked for a better start to the bank holiday weekend. Huge thank you to everybody who came and made our fiesta so much fun! Incredible paella and salads from Rice&Ember and awesome entertainment from the Mariachi King. A sellout event which worked our frozen margarita maker to its max!! Mayfield we love you!

¡Viva Margarita! We did it in style… with the help of the incredible ‘mixologist’ Ella - who I am very excited to say, has agreed to come and help out at our Fiesta in Melford House next weekend! Fantastic margaritas and frozen margaritas will be at our bar next weekend! Sangria will also be available! Join us if you can for a fun filled delicious Hispanic inspired day! We went to visit the fabulous Rice & Ember at Brighton foodie festival today. Enjoyed an incredible chicken Paella in anticipation of our forthcoming Hispanic Fiesta on 23rd May @ Melford House. Deliciousness… Rice & Ember will be catering at the event and be preparing freshly cooked Paella for all guests whilst they enjoy live music from ‘The Mariachi King’. Paella included in ticket price! Melford House will be hosting a Spanish/Mexican themed ‘Fiesta’ on 23rd May (1-4pm). Join us for a glass of Sangria or a long Mojito to beckon in summer. Freshly cooked paella from the incredible Rice & Ember alongside soul enriching entertainment by a fabulous Mexican Mariachi Band. You may have noticed we've been very quiet at Melford House! 2025 was a busy year for us doing boring work related stuff!! We are keen to get going again in 2026 and have a few exciting things in the pipeline - including linking with our wonderful Wateryard theatre group to put on a play in June 2026. Watch this space!!

In the meantime, as the memorial hall is being re-developed, we are aware that there is limited bookable space in the village for community events . So if you or anyone you know fancies using the space at Melford House please get in touch. Open for the space to be used for local groups to use for classes, workshops, meetings or even pop up events or supper clubs. Ideally arts and well-being related events during the day times as the property is still residential - but open to suggestions!! £10 per hour contribution requested to support bills etc. Space has 3 interlinked rooms (see floorplan) a small kitchenette and a toilet.

A big shout out to the wonderful Eleanor Ross who has created this fantastic window display for Mayfield post office. Ingenious idea courtesy of Andrew Ratcliffe. Eleanor currently runs a very popular art class at Melford House in Mayfield on Wednesdays. Due to popular demand she will be starting a new class on Thursdays 10-12. Price is £160 for an 8 week block of classes or £20 per class (materials included). New classes start October 2025. If interested please get in touch with before the places get snapped up. Limited availability.
