As a funeral celebrant, I probably think about end of life more than the average person...but it always reminds me to remember how precious it is to be alive...right now.

Nick Cave writes about this far more eloquently than I can:

We all stand before the world with our faculties - our minds, bodies, mouths, and hands - each of us shaping the environment around us. What we think, do, and say is fundamental to the survival of this grand human project. Each of us is precious, and our actions are vital, everything we do and say matters. We can speak beauty into the world or poison it with our words; we can build things up or tear them down; we can dream of a world that is vast, alive, and interesting, or reason it to be small, hard, and empty. "We are each an artist", said the poet, priest, and philosopher John O’Donohue, "We each possess an imagination. Everyone, whether they like it or not, is involved in the construction of the world". Every action we take and every word we speak builds or breaks the planet. We must approach the world as collaborators and willing participants in its preservation, and each other, Wallis, as friends.'

Is this one of the most beautiful tributes ever? Made by Good Florist Guide member Jacqui O - Cheshire Florals it hung on the family home door as a welcome to the mourners. Made with living Muscari bulbs, the handcrafted heart-shaped wreath symbolised love and remembrance and once the flowers faded the bulbs could be replanted to allow the loved one’s memory to bloom for years to come.
Not just beautiful and totally sustainable but a oh so lovely way to celebrate a life.

Let’s talk about funeral planning...not financial planning but the process of reflecting on your own wish list for the right send off for you. I know just how much difference it can make to family members when they have an understanding of what their person wanted to happen as a celebration of their life. We are often reluctant to explore planning our own funeral but it can be an enormous help for loved ones who want to honour your wishes.

You might want to start by considering what type of ceremony you want to have. Is it important for you to have a religious ceremony or do you fancy something that is more focussed on a celebration of your life? Where would you like the ceremony to take place? A church or crematorium are not the only options and there are many alternative settings that might be more fitting...a local hotel, your local pub or a place that has special meaning to you and your family are all possibilities.

I am always happy to guide you through the process so that you can create something that is truly personal for you.

Here's an interesting comment that was made by a family member as he reflected on the ceremony that we created for his parent.

In a word full of rich diversity, I believe we need to celebrate end of life in a way that pays tribute to the wonderful differences innate in every person.

A celebration of life often takes place at a traditional venue but I can also guide you towards other possibilities such as a family home or garden, a historic building, a hotel or an outdoor natural space such as a hillside or woodland that is meaningful to you. It can take place at the same time as a burial or cremation or it might be on a different day, at a different location. The coffin of the person who has died can be present and then ‘waved off’ or you might choose for the cremation or burial to happen first.

Saying goodbye to a loved one is a deeply personal and profound moment. It is a moment that should not be rushed, for it is not just a mere formality but a heartfelt celebration of the individual’s life. Each person is unique, with their own set of quirks, passions, and experiences that shaped their life’s story. Therefore, every ceremony should be a bespoke tribute, a celebration that fits the individual. It should reflect their personality, their values, and the impact they had on those around them. It allows us to laugh and cry, to feel the full spectrum of emotions that come with loss, and to share stories that keep the spirit of the departed alive in our hearts.
There is no one-size-fits all and so many possible ways to create a celebration that is unique…
Choose where you want the funeral to be; you are not restricted to a religious building or crematorium and a woodland, a hotel or your home might be more apt for your person. Share a toast with their favourite craft ale or a glass of prosecco...maybe a slice of cake made to their preferred recipe?
Let it be a time where the tapestry of their life is woven together through the shared memories and emotions of those who cherished them. Remember, in this final act of love, there is no hurry! You don’t have to have the funeral within two weeks. Try not to just opt for the standard template. Take your time, breathe, think about what sort of ceremony is right for you and your family.

Details matter...choose a coffin or shroud that represents the individuality of your person. One size/shape/colour/material does not fit all and that's still true at the end of life.

There are so many options that can celebrate a life and honour the values that we hold dear. A felted shroud can wrap a loved one in thick woolen folds that can be beautifully embroidered and perfectly complement a natural burial.

A recycled wooden coffin is both sustainable and beautiful in it's simplicity, but can also lend itself to more personalised decoration that reflects the life of the person it carries.

A cardboard coffin can take centre stage literally so that friends and family can add their own farewell messages or memories as part of the celebration of life ceremony.

Woo-hoo!!!
I'm now an official 'Celebrant Plus' and am very excited to continue on my journey as a funeral celebrant.

Creating farewell ceremonies that truly reflect the life that they celebrate is a wonderful calling.

I want the guests at my services, to experience a ceremony that is completely tailored to incorporate aspects of their loved one's life. I'm passionate about attention to detail - thinking about everything from transport, to the type of coffin, to things that guests can take away with them, catch phrases, music, poems that really reflected their life

- and I will always leave space for family and friends to be involved.
