Poppy Atkinson: Heartbreaking Loss Shakes Kendal
Poppy Atkinson, a 10-year-old girl from Kendal, passed away on 5 March 2025 after a tragic collision with a car at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club. The incident occurred on a sports pitch on Shap Road, leaving her family and community devastated.
Poppy was a gifted footballer with big dreams. She played for Kendal United and the county under-12 team, showcasing her talent and determination. Her family described her as their “focal point,” a child whose love for football defined their lives.
“Poppy lived for football,” her family said. “She idolised players like Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway and was set on playing for Manchester United one day. Her energy was contagious, and her skill was incredible for her age.”
Despite her petite frame, Poppy competed with older players, earning admiration for her technical ability and drive. “She was small but fierce,” her family noted. “Her teammates and opponents alike envied her talent.”
Poppy’s 7-year-old brother, Edward, was her biggest fan. “She was his hero,” her family shared. “She’d coach him and cheer him on. Their bond was unbreakable.” Her loss has left Edward and her parents grappling with grief.
The Kendal football community has been deeply affected. Kendal United called her “a shining light” and plans to dedicate a match to her memory. Local residents have left flowers and messages at the club, honouring Poppy’s spirit.
Poppy’s family hopes her story inspires others. “She wanted to prove girls could succeed in football,” they said. “Poppy Atkinson was special—a force we’ll never forget.”
