Awkward Re-Entry sci-fi standup comedy, Thurs 23 July 7pm
Listen to writer Phillip Carter interview with .mr on our YouTube channel.

Awkward Re-entry is a comedy show about what it means to be human in our increasingly inhuman world. Simultaneously introspective and cosmic. Expect quantum fire alarms, hilarious theories about aliens, and a story about the most awkward one-night-stand in the known universe.

In an era when everyone seems to want to abandon authorship of their own lives and let ‘AI’ write for them, sliding dimly into sleepy reliance on unthinking machines, Phillip is instead boldly going where everyone else should probably be - he is writing this stuff himself, using his human brain.

Featured on Channel 4’s Lego Masters, Phillip Carter has been a geeky comedian from the start. His fiction features neurodiverse characters with a sense of humour navigating the enormity of the cosmos, and his real life as a comedian isn’t much different. If you ever want to ponder the nature of reality whilst laughing in a cocktail bar, Phillip is the comedian to watch.

Phillip’s debut book WHO BUILT THE HUMANS? has become something of a prop at his comedy nights. People don’t expect that a comedian would have the spare time to write a large doorstop into existence, but he has, and audiences are always pleased to discover the stories within are just as weird, just as dark, and just as hilarious and existential as his stand-up.

David Degiorgio, Stir Crazy Productions, on 94.4FM Salford City Radio talking to Ian Rothwell about East by Steven Berkoff, being performed 8-11 July, at The Kings Arms, Salford, as part of Greater Manchester Fringe 2026.

Before Eastenders, there was EAST.

Ever wondered what Shakespeare would have written had he grown up in the visceral East End of London in the early 1970s? Steven Berkoff’s masterpiece offers a fearless look into that world through the eyes of an everyday family.

It is a story exploding with rage, regret, and lust. Set in a time of pleasure palaces, gin, and ultraviolence, the play captures a specific British era defined by Crossroads and casual racism. It uses a unique, poetic language to elevate the grit of the streets into something operatic and unforgettable.

Rarely staged but constantly discussed, this is a vital chance to see a play where the message of lost voices and failed dreams has never been so relevant.

Why you should see it

A Rare Revival: This is a unique opportunity to witness one of Berkoff’s most influential works in an intimate setting.

Stunning Language: Experience the famous “Berkovian” style that blends high verse with rough street slang.

Timeless Themes: Though set in the 1970s, its exploration of urban frustration and identity still resonates today.

Will Danes: Presented by Mental Illness combines dark musical comedy, satirical cabaret and original comic songs filled with razor-sharp lyrics on Thursday 2 July at Ice Shack, Withington, and Tuesday 28 July at The Peer Hat, Northern Quarter, as part of Greater Manchester Fringe 2026.

Will's songs tackle everything from polyamorous relationships to performative politics, billionaires, religion, toxic masculinity, the struggle to fit in, and loneliness.

Using his experience of mental illness as part of a broader comic voice — one that mixes sincerity, theatricality and joyful bad taste, the result is a show that balances cutting satire with surprising warmth.

At the centre of the hour is “I’m a Catch”, a comic anthem of confused self-belief, chemical imbalance and fragile optimism that captures the show’s tone: honest and musically ambitious with a balance of humour and poignancy.

Will said: “When I started writing songs for my own entertainment a year ago, I had no plans to perform them.

“After a while, I wanted to share them, so I put on a gig at my flat for friends and family which went surprisingly well. Eventually, I tried my luck at open mics. So, here we are.”

Blending fiendish rhyme, strong melodic writing and a charismatic vocal performance, the show offers a distinctive new voice in musical comedy.
