Interested in Gilbert & Sullivan and want to know more about them? We don't perform, but are an appreciation Society and enjoy talks, concerts, recitals etc given by guest speakers. Our aim is to learn more about Gilbert & Sullivan and their world in a relaxed and enjoyable way. A Trial by Jury “Double Bill”

Our friends from Sale G&S Society have entertained us superbly in the past and we are delighted they have agreed to pay another visit this coming Sunday. In celebration of its 150th anniversary year, they will perform Trial by Jury, live at Cross Street Chapel and everyone is welcome to attend this FREE event. In addition, our Chairman David Walton, will give some thoughts on the opera in an illustrated presentation. Start time will be 2.30 prompt.

John and Rosalind are both well-known members of the D’Oyly Carte, having joined the company in the late 60s/early 70s. Opera North’s “Ruddigore”

James Hurley is the director of Opera North’s recent revival of their very successful production of “Ruddigore”. James kindly agreed to give a presentation in December to enlighten us on his thoughts about the opera and how the revival came about. Unfortunately, because of technical problems, the presentation could not go ahead. However, it has now been re-arranged for this coming Tuesday, the 28th January, again by Zoom. A Talk by James Hurley, Revival Director of Opera North’s “Ruddigore”

James began his career in 2009 with English Touring Opera. Since then, he has directed at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House and the Salzburg Festival, amongst others. Of particular interest to our Society is that James was also responsible for Opera North’s recent excellent revival of “Ruddigore”. During this Zoom event, James will enlighten us on the production and give an insight into the creative ideas behind it. Everyone is welcome to join in the evening. A Concert by Sophie Clarke (mezzo) and James Connolly (baritone)

Our November event will be a live concert at Cross Street chapel in Manchester by two young singers, accompanied by our member, David Wheeler, at the piano. Sophie Clarke and James Connolly are both postgraduate students at the RNCM. Sophie was the recipient of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society award for the 2023/24 academic year, made possible by a gift by long-standing member Dr Alan Young. Everyone is welcome to attend. The admission price is £5 for members and £7 for visitors.

David Steadman in Conversation with David Walton

The first event of our 2024/25 programme (our 93rd season) will be live at our usual venue, Cross Street Chapel, this coming Sunday. David Steadman, one of our Vice-Presidents, has a wide knowledge of all things G&S and is a very entertaining and interesting speaker. We are delighted that he has agreed to talk to us.
