It is always a delight to receive end of term cards from students. Online reviews are marvellous for attracting new clients, but nothing quite warms the cockles of the heart like a hand drawn card covered in spiders.

Hello, splendid new followers!

Just to let you all know, Science Workshops will be available over the Easter Holidays for any and all Young Scientists looking to expand their knowledge of this crazy universe of ours. Morning and afternoon slots will be available for Home Workshops during the holiday period covering a variety of topics, including Rocket Science for Kids, Mysteries of the Deep Sea, and The Engineering of Ancient Rome.

Every workshop includes fascinating facts, amazing experiments, and the creation of your Young Scientist's very own Take-Home Science Project!

My workshops are suitable for Young Scientists between the ages of 4 and 12, and can be held at the dining table, in the garden, on the kitchen floor, or anywhere you please for up to 10 children! All I need is 20 minutes to set up before the workshop begins. To see if you are in my catchment zone, please get in touch (but if you are within a ~10 mile radius of East Manchester, you probably are!)

Workshops cover different material every week, and are age and ability level adjusted to suit your Young Scientist. I have been teaching Science to students in both mainstream and SEND schools for over a decade, and all are welcome to join in with the fun!

All materials are provided by me, and I'm a firm believer in the Scouts policy of "leave no trace" - so no worries about any messy clearup either. I am fully DBS checked and have 13 years working in education.

I firmly believe that science education can be entertaining and fun without compromising on the actual learning, and I have been delighted to get feedback from parents in the past about how enthusiastically their children have told them everything that they had learned in the day's workshop. If a student is excited and interested in a topic then they are going to be engaged and receptive to learning about it!

Pricing:
- Prices start at £30 for a 1hr, 1-to-1 workshop, with an additional £10 per attendee e.g. siblings, friends. Group bookings are encouraged to help spread the cost, and up to 12 children can be accommodated per workshop.
- Siblings aged 5 and under are able to join in on workshops for free!
- At the moment I am also offering 50% off your first workshop to ensure that they are the right fit for your Young Scientist/s, which is only payable after the workshop's conclusion to ensure you are 100% satisfied.

Get in touch today via DM, Whatsapp, or email, and I will get back to you as soon as I can!

Yours scientifically,

Professor Archie

Orange you glad to see this fruity fellow!

Orange peel contains a compound called "Limonene". Limonene is what gives citrus fruits their zingy, zesty sour flavour. If you've ever eaten something orange or lemon flavoured, then you've probably eaten limonene! It can be extracted from the peel and added to fizzy drinks, sweets, jellies, puddings, cakes and other baked goods, and even bread, chocolate, sauces and beer!

Limonene is also an extremely useful, naturally occurring cleaning product. Lots of cleaning chemicals are orange or lemon scented to help cover gross smells, but limonene goes a step further by being a ~*naturally occurring solvent*~.

The sciencey explanation for this is that it is a NON-POLAR HYDROCARBON - and substances like grease, oil and many adhesives are also non-polar. We hear echoes of alchemy in the chemist's phrase "like dissolves like", as the limonene is able to dissolve these stubborn materials without the need for stronger, more hazardous and less biodegradable chemicals.

So, what can we do with limonene at home? it would take an awful lot of orange peel to clean the kitchen, but you can do a simple experiment with just a balloon and an orange.

- Blow up the balloon (not too big!), then hold an orange, satsuma, or tangerine over it.
- Stick a fingernail into the peel and then... see what happens!

Drop a comment below if you gave it a try and let me know the effects!

Human - or rather, pre-human - ingenuity goes back a LONG way.

Did you know that 99.3% of our time on Earth as a species was spent in the Stone Age?

This week at the Lab we have been studying: The Science of the Stone Age! Here's a taste of what we're learning about:

- How to craft simple tools from stone and wood (carefully!)
- How humans are genetically predisposed towards teamwork (you wouldn't be here otherwise!)
- What to do if a megatherium wanders into your cave (wander out, very quietly)
- How to cure a Stone Age headache (if you can't find any willow bark, cutting a hole in your head is almost as good)
- And lastly, how to mix your own pigments to create your own cave art!

If you're interested in signing up to one of my online science workshops, please feel free to get in touch using the details below 🔭🧪🔬
