“A new storyline on the soap opera Coronation Street explores consent and rape.

After a boozy night out, Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney), age 19, and her pal Aaron Sandford (James Craven) continue the party at home and share a kiss. They move things to the bedroom, where Amy says she isn’t feeling well and needs to lie down.

Not backing off, Aaron continues to kiss Amy on the bed before having sex with her, as she is unaware and unable to give consent.

In the morning she realises she has been raped – which her friend furiously denies and claims that they just slept with one another.

Elle says her character feels ‘taken advantage of’ and like her trust has been ‘betrayed’.

‘It’s an intense storyline,’ says Elle, ‘but that for me is why we do this job’, adding that the subject is ‘so topical’ and she knows ‘so many people’ who have gone through a similar situation.

‘It’s interesting to delve into this issue and really talk about consent,’ she says, ‘so we can open up these conversations.
When I thought about the impact the storyline could have, I felt really honoured and appreciated. Being a young cast member, to be given such a huge responsibility is just incredible.

If this storyline prevents this from happening to at least one person, then it’s done its job.

[The Schools Consent Project charity gives] people this education. It allows people to think twice’”

This is Salome, she was introduced to from .woman.at.a.time in 2012, where she had been taken into a refuge in Moribus Kenya. Salome told Jean her story. When she was 12 her mother asked her to go down to the river to collect water. There a friend told her that the old man visiting her family had come to offer her bride price to make her his fourth wife and that she was to undergo in preparation.Salome disbelieved the friend but upon returning she was sent to her hut she silently crept back and listened in.There she heard the transaction of bartering for cows as her dowry.
If you ask Salome about the courage or determination it took to flee that night not even knowing where to go & seek refuge, she just laughs & said there was no courage she ran. She ran with only one shoe on through difficult mountainous terrain with acacia thorns on the ground and only the moonlight for guidance. She hid in the day and travelled at night and slept in trees for safety. She hid from others walking on their way in case they were looking for her or told the next village.
After three days she was drinking by the river and saw a woman who she said looked kind and she shared her story. The lady took her to the police station who then took her to Moribus Refuge Centre where she stayed for 4 years until she met Jean, who then raised money for Salome to get an education.Jean felt Salome always had an air of sadness about her, she had been on her own for over six years with no family to turn to, so Jean encouraged Salome to return home to meet with her parents. My photographs are from the day we trekked following the journey she took five years before walking through scrub and thorns and arid dry land we followed her path .She kept hidden behind Jean clinging onto her clothes, Finally when we entered their thorned cicular fence with their mud plastered home Salome still remained hidden. When she emerged her mother showed no joy or welcome whatsoever. For nearly twenty seconds there was just silence!
Then a huge smile fell on her mothers face. This was not apathy but non recognition. Her father just wept, tears of joy rolled down his face

This is Catherine she was cut against her will & unknowingly whilst giving birth to her son! The mother in law paid the tribal midwife to carry out , as Catherine was not cut upon marrying and was seen to bring shame on the family. She was completely ostracised and told she was unclean and smelled, she was not allowed to cook for her husband or mix with other women. When the midwife cut her she also cut the baby’s head. After the birth Catherine couldn’t believe the pain she was in and the excess bleeding she suffered as she was totally unaware of being cut, she began to smell and was told to go away whenever she came close to anyone, they would hold their noses. Her husband left and the baby was taken from her, it was only her grandmother that accepted her. She managed to get a mirror and check herself only to find her skin was so badly hacked off it was now hanging from her, it had been become infected and when a maggot fell from between her legs she realised what had happened. The police got involved but sadly the mother in law fled and eventually paid of the police. I went to Kenya to document the woman & girls who have fled from FGM for .woman.at.a.time they help young girls and women like Catherine to give them a right to better future by giving them an opportunity to gain economic power over their lives. If you would like to know more about FGM visit .woman.at.a.time
I photographed Catherine a few times in my time I spent in Pokot & if I’m honest she was lovely lady & tried her hardest to put on a brave & happy face, but she was quite difficult to photograph as she had an unnerving look in her eyes, like I could see the trauma in her soul!
Today I’ve been out walking raising money for the charity with if you would like to donate pls see the swipe up in my story or go to https://www.onewomanatatime.co.uk/ & donate on there page

This Khaleesi-esque braid was a pleasure to create and looks simply stunning with Ruth’s silver tones. Walking down the aisle with this look would be perfect for a boho bride. used my usual product dry volume blast to add body and texture ❤️

Happy to all the strong independent ladies out there. I’m definitely raising my little mermaid to be of others needs & to all who are drawn to her!
here’s a little “A woman should be taught to believe in protecting herself on her own and not to depend on a man for her protection. She has the power to protect the world and not just herself.”
